Was I dreaming or did we have a recent discussion of where to dine in New Orleans? I don’t know if it was in this forum or the travel forum. Search does not bring it to light. Could it have been on Facebook?
Well, if it does not exist, let’s start a new thread. My sister and BIL plan to go in the fall. Probably anniversary and culinary adventure since they are foodies. Any recent experiences for the good or bad in the Big Easy?
OK. I’m not sure about the life-expectancy of these places (I don’t know if they’re around any more), but I would maybe try these places:
(not in any order)
The Old Coffee Pot Restaurant Established in 1894, The Old Coffee Pot has been known to serve the best breakfast in New Orleans. Our lunch offers a variety of options to hold our patrons over to dinner. Our evening menu offers a reasonably priced selection of creole, Cajun and signature cuisines to satisfy any appetite.
Mahony’s Po-Boy Shop WINNER 2009 New Orleans Po-Boy Preservation Festival Best Specialty Po-Boy, Non-Seafood: Mahony’s Po-Boy Shop – Chicken Liver Po-Boy with Creole Slaw. Mahony’s Po-Boy Shop is a tribute to the old neighborhood Po-Boy shop Restaurants of New Orleans,
Parasol’s Restaurant and Bar New Orleans neighborhood bar and restaurant specializing in roast beef po-boy since 1952.
Surrey’s Cafe Nestled in the Lower Garden District on historic Magazine Street, Surrey’s Juice Bar and Café offers some of New Orleans’ freshest and finest breakfast and lunch. Started in 2001 by owner Greg Surrey, Chef Adrian Schrauwen, continues to oversee the high standards that Surrey’s is known for with delectable specials.
Katie’s Restaurant and Bar Katie’s opened as a corner lunch restaurant in October 1984, following the rich tradition of New Orleans neighborhoods. Like so many other renowned eateries, Katie’s is family owned and operated. Founded by Mr. Leo Leininger in the wake of the sagging oil industry, it was his fresh start in a new career. Katie’s was actually the idea of Mr. Leo’s daughter Cathy and they named the establishment after her grandmother. Sadly, Mr. Leo passed away in 1987, yet his family continued to operate the burgeoning neighborhood favorite vigorously, with his undaunted spirit.
Parasol’s has changed hands. They old crew took their recipes and went to Tracey’s a couple blocks away (in 2010). If at ate at Parasol’s before, that food is now at Tracey’s.
Thank you for the link, Roberto. Hopefully the Big Easy will not suffer too badly from the storm!
Thank you, Francis for the links. Great research as usual.
Bob, the discussion I referenced above was a few weeks ago. It was posted by someone ITB asking about cheap eats. I said go to Central Grocery and share a Muffaletta and suggested Acme Oyster Bar. There were other good suggestions but a search does not bring up the thread. That is why I thought maybe it was on Facebook. Hell to get old! Thanks for your search effort! Almost time to bake Mama’s Pecan Pie and other seasonal goodies…
Barry, my sister and BIL will look into Tracey’s.
Any other suggestions for good eats in N’awlins? Keep 'em coming!
Nancy- just cheap eats or fine dining as well ? NOLA.Com is the website for the Times Picayune and Brett Anderson has been the food critic for 12 years and is terrific. Great lists of places to go.
Here is his top 10. Would not agree with all as my favorite Stella ! didn’t make it this year but i haven’t been in 2 years so i may be out of date a bit. If there is one place they have to go to is Conchon. Donald Link has 2 restaurants in the top 10. Herbsaint is the other and is also one of our favorites.
No one makes better chargrilled Oysters than the original Drago’s in the Metairie location. Acme in the qtr is a good option though with great po-boys. Check out the link below. Many lists and info for research. We’re going back for thanksgiving week and I may just skip the turkey !
And if you do one fine dining place I’d go to Stella over August
Actually, we are interested in fine dining as well. The former discussion had the “cheap” reference. My sister and her husband would be interested in high and low dining as long as it is good! We moved here from there 31 years ago, and remember when a new bistro had a larger than life chef. Paul Prudhomme was at the Brennan’s new place called Mr. B’s Bistro! Where has time gone? Enjoy Thanksgiving week. Should be fun.
Did not know Paul was at Mr B’s. They were one of my favorites in the 90’s especially for business lunch. Friday always seemed to end at lunch should you go there. Could have been the .25 martinis ! You moved away right around the time we moved there. Enjoy your trip !
Unfortunately, we won’t be going. I am asking for my sister and BIL who live in Hilton Head. We moved to New Orleans in November of 1979. Our first meal out was at Mr. B’s. It was hard to miss the large guy in the open kitchen. I had my first Pasta Primavera that day. It was years later that we realized the big chef was Mr. Prudhomme.
