Can’t speak to the others, but I think of Scarecrow as much more powerful style than Detert. Detert Cab Franc is some of the best I have ever had and I am not sure there are analogs in Napa for it. Speaking of Cabernet Sauvignon, I think of Di Costanzo, Carter Cellars (in certain years) and Dominus (though not 100% Cab Sauv) might be considered stylistically similar IMO.
Tom Garrett owner and winemaker of Detert is also the talented winemaker at Dakota Shy. Different fruit source, but a very nice line up of similarly well crafted top notch wines. Detert tends for me to be dense, brawny, and rugged black and red fruited style made to last and cellar. Reminds me of the classic delicious Napa Cabs of the 1970’s.
Vine Hill Ranch (VHR) and Bond’s Vencina might also be a very good comparison for Detert as they are both hillside fruit facing east and from the western bench near Oakville/Yountville area.
a friend and I went to Perrys to split the pork chop. Popped a 19 Detert Cab Sauv that was delicious.
Library Release is live:
This is the time of year that we usually release our new vintage of the East Block Cabernet Franc. For the 2020 vintage, while the East Block old vines made a gorgeous Cabernet Franc, we elected to declassify the wine and instead used the East Block Cabernet Franc to make the 2020 Oakville Cabernet Franc. With the unknowns of the year, from Covid to fires, we decided it was not the vintage to bottle our flagship wine. That made the 2020 Oakville Cabernet Franc even better – but left a hole in our release schedule.
Since we don’t have a new vintage of East Block, we looked back into our library and uncovered fantastic older East Block and Cabernet Franc magnums and 3Ls as well as some Cabernet Sauvignon 750mls to offer. All of these wines are available in very small quantities and will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
We have exceptional vintages available in this offering including large format Cabernet Franc and East Block bottlings from 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2019. We also have Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2011 and 2019 vintages in 750ml format.
I was allocated some of this today, if anyone is interested PM me for additional details…
Happy to share mine too, have pretty much carte blanche.
I’m in on side older offerings.
Looks like I got access too - anyone tried the 2019 CS? I had to skip it when it was originally offered and looks like I have another opportunity.
I was going to order a magnum of the declassified 2020 cab franc for $200, but after adding $50 shipping for that one bottle & then tax it was getting too close to $300 for me. I’ll wait for next year.
I had the 19 Cab Saul and thought it was excellent.
Yeah, I was a fan too. Worthwhile IMO, I think I have around a half dozen laying down.
This offering I went in on a 3L of 2013 Oakville CF.
I am drinking the 2nd half of a bottle of the 2013 CF Oakville (that I opened last night) as I write this…it is a great bottle of wine, and is still relatively young…Your 3L should last for a long time…
Thank you Paul. I read notes and write ups of the time, votes of confidence here and from you count a lot more. For the money and the age it just resonated the most. That said, 3Ls are quite a commitment at a future date lol. Usually requires a few Berserkers or those of similar DNA to appreciate such a bottle. I’ve seen to have bought more larger formats of late, at some point I’ll need to figure that out lol.
