Interesting that the Cab franc allocations are soooooo tight but the cab allocations have mostly doubled. Anyone have any idea why this might be? It’s either the harvest or economics
I have a question about the Detert Cabernet Sauvignon. I got on the list and ordered my 3-pack allocation and received them recently.
My impression from things said on this thread (and elsewhere) was that I should expect wines that “aren’t overly rich or heavy wines but have a lot of complexity,” as Tom put it; or, as Bob put it, basically a “lighter, nicely balanced version” of Mac Donald. Or even as Galloni put it a “classically-built, medium-bodied Napa Valley Cabernet”.
I bought them because those quotes sound very good to me. So, it was a bit curious to see that 14.7% ABV marked on the bottle. Is that normal? Should I still expect the same style and not worry about it?
Guillermo, Detert has always managed to be as you’ve quoted, even with a pretty punchy amount of alcohol. One tip: decant and let open for at least 2 hours, 4 if you have time. I mean you can give it a shot without a decant, but I’ve had vintages back to 2002 and no matter how old they are, they need a couple hours or more before they come together.
I received an email today saying the 2019 East Block offering opens Tuesday, August 16th. 200 cases produced. Rated 97 points by AG of Vinous. Sold in wood cased 3 packs. Last year’s price was $525 per 3 pack.
The East Block might be the oldest cab franc vines in Napa, planted in 1949.
Detert also has a West & South block which includes Cab Sauv & Cab Franc but are much more recent plantings, IIRC.
Looked this up: West Block was replanted in 2015 and contains CS & CF. South Block was replanted in 1997 and is only CS.
Also, the base Cab Franc blends from all blocks, but the East Block bottling is naturally only from the old vine CF of the East Block.
And as far as taste goes, it’s really interesting to drink a regular and east block side by side over a few hours. For the first couple hours, there’s not much of a difference. But then there is. East Block has, as the kids say, an extra gear.
Easy choice to order. I tuck these ones away for a while in the long haul section. My intro to them was at Press in Napa through the 2011. Loved it & was able to find more soon after on K&L auctions.
The other day a friend asked for a good comp for Detert quality, finesse, style, etc. since they’re more under the radar within Napa. Struggled to land on something… any ideas? Was trying to come up with something like Schrader, Scarecrow, Promontory, Realm etc that had good name recognition
