While having fun some fun with the Grape Radio crew today we popped this bottle and I think we were all pretty impressed. I have always held the entire Dethune range in high regards and this one really shows why. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea as it is made in a big, spicy, oxidative style, but this 50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir really has it going on. Lots of rich spicy vanilla, citrus, and nutty sherry on the nose from the time it spent aging in 205 L Champenois oak. The palate is also rich, but has a good, solid backbone of citrus that balances the wine out as it weaves its way in and out of the creamy spices that ooze out of every crevice.
Even though this is labeled as a NV, it is a pure 1999 and was disgorged sometime around 2007. It is on the pricey side as it normally sells for around $100 in the US, but I think it is worth it. It will age well, but I’m not sure it will get better which means you can drink it now or later and get a high level performance. As a bonus, this wine is built for the dinner table. Pair with some savory poultry or a hearty meat dish and this will match up well. Only 1,000 bottles of this are made per vintage so if you see a bottle, give it a go… unless you don’t like the richer side of Champagne.
