I remember buying the stuff for $11.99/lb two years ago and then it jumped to $13.99/lb sometime late last year. I was at my local Costco just this past weekend and noticed that the price jumped up again to $15.99/lb. While I still think this is a great price for some quality product, it is a far cry from the “heluva deal” it once was. The marbling is also hit and miss so I check the steaks each time I go and when it looks good, I stock up.
Is this a regional thing or are people seeing price increases in other parts of the country?
Last weekend I was talking with a local producer of Berkshire pork. She told me that because they grow all their feed, their pork business is way up - they have become much more cost competitive with commodity pork raised on purchased feed.
Tex is spot on. I’ve been getting “alerts” from wholesalers for months. Some are saying don’t expect any protein prices to get much better any time soon.
I am more worried about the quality decrease I have seen in the last year at Costco on prime beef.
I just last week bought a pack of prime filets and was amazed at the trimming I had to do. By the time I removed the fatty chunks and the silver skin I had paid for 4 oz of scrap in that package.
I think the prime meats are not turning well because all the steaks appeared brown on the exterior
Ditto here in Florida on price and quality. It has been very hit or miss on quality - more miss lately. I just bought a whole Ribeye yesterday because the cut steaks looked good. The cut steaks were $15.99 and the whole ribeye was $10.19.
We made kebabs a couple a weeks ago with Costco prime tri-tip steaks @ $7.99/lb. They tasted pretty damn good. Not sure if this is a proce increase but the quality was very good.
Most of the time I can pick from the regular Choice and get as much marbling as the Prime, sometimes not, so I go Prime. Breaking down a side was not worth it to me.
