Marechale is complicated because Mugnier got it back from Faiveley relatively recently, and it’s an ENORMOUS vineyard. It will take awhile for the viticulture to catch up to plots he’s been farming for much longer. I think the wines improved a lot since he started making them, though.
Take a look at the wines that are going to be made from chezeaux and lamarche’s vineyards in the next couple years (and the prices) and you’ll understand pretty quickly the importance of producer.
I had the '08 G-H Mazis last weekend; it was much as you described it. The fruit was the first thing you notice; no one hadn’t encountered this note in a burgundy before. Black cherry, plum were floated. But there was plenty of complexity and some lenghth. I think it could go for a long time, still a little young for my palate.
I used to own a Rousseau Mazy, 2012, I think, but I had to hand it over as a buy in for a DRC tasting, along wirh a Giacosa red label. Other than my experience with these 2 Mazis/Mazy, really 1, I haven’t had any others–glad to change that though.
I think it’s an interesting vineyard; in my experience it’s a bit more rustic and takes more time than other gevrey GCs. They can be really good in the right vintages or with enough time.
