Potential Wineries to Visit in Napa

Favorites when I was there were in 2018:

The only one I attended that I wish I hadn’t: HALL. Our tour guy was some grouchy old ex military guy. Yelled at my wife and I for talking when we weren’t even aware he was our tour guide or the tour had started yet. The tour itself was okay, kind of forgettable. The wines are obviously solid, if not overpriced. And the tour concludes with a ruse to clearly drink some wine, leave your credit card here, and GTFO. Most wineries do it to some degree, but your could feel the heavy hand of marketing and Texas billionaires. I shit you not, you exit through the gift shop. I was surprised I didn’t have to try and find my car in the Mickey Red or Goofy Green parking lot once I got off the monorail. Pass. I guess after getting drunk with Gary Pisoni and laughing when my mom fell down the stairs on top of him…most other tours are going to pale in comparison

Last time I visited Napa we stayed within walking distance of Hall. Went there because it was close and I’ve had Kathryn Hall before. I agree it was OUR least favorite as well. Our host was bragging to the other host how much money he made off of customers right in front of us. They have a contest going on. It’s sad, superficial, tasteless, and unprofessional. We are going to Napa again soon and will definitely not go back due to that behavior.

Had an amazing birthday last year spent at these 3 wineries all within a mile or two of one another:

The Vineyard House
Futo
Promontory

The Vineyard House has some really solid QPR wines - Not cheap, but really solid for where they are located.

I’d love to hear about your Futo visit. Was it worth the time?
Oakford Vineyards was a favorite winery back in the day. I found some of their older bottles ‘87-92 and absolutely loved them. Then I couldn’t find them after the ‘98 vintage.
Tom & Kyle Futo bought it & ive been buying it again since the 2006 vintage.

One of my favorite wine nights ever at our house was drinking the ‘87 & ‘97 Oakfords and the 2007 Futo!

The visit to Futo was great. Everyone there from Mr. Futo to our host, Mai, we’re fantastic. Very engaging, positive individuals, who clearly enjoy what they do. And we certainly weren’t big spenders, but the treated us like we were. Of course, I wish I had more money to spend there!
