Portland and the WV

So, out of the blue, I have a business trip to Seattle to which I am adding three nights in Portland (or thereabouts). I love Portland and the WV, but haven’t spent any significant time there in five years or so.

If I stay in the WV, will everyone be picking grapes? This is mid-September.

And what new is there on the food scene? If it was up to me, I’d eat at Higgins, probably Wildwood, and I don’t know what else. What’s happening there right now?

I’ll leave it for someone else to discuss the PDX restaurant scene, but as far as picking in mid-September, maybe Argyle will be picking grapes for sparkling wine, but that’s about it. As few wineries may be bringing in fruit from Southern Oregon or Washington, but as Bob said elsewhere, at least for Pinot and Chardonnay, it looks like early October at this point.

Higgins and Wildwood are still around, but IMHO Higgins is overpriced and Wildwood is inconsistent. There are a number of more interesting alternatives in the same NW-cuisine kinda vein - I’d suggest Le Pigeon (NW with French overtones), Park Kitchen, or Ten 01. For more Mediterranean-influenced cuisine, I’d look at Tabla, Castagna, or Alba Osteria. Finally, if you want a good bistro menu, head to Carafe.

From what I can tell the food scene out there has changed quite a bit over the last 5 years. I spent 1 night in Portland last fall before going to the WV we opted for Paley’s Place which seemed like a safe bet. It was very good but I would love to go back and try some of the places that have opened up over the last 2 years…

This seems like a pretty good blog.

In my book, best Thai on the planet outside of Thailand…Pok Pok in Portland. Enjoy

I’ve been there. Once. With a date. So salty both of us were appalled.
