2017 Istine Chianti Classico Riserva Levigne - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG (2/22/2026)
Medium red. The nose is even light for a Radda CCR, red cherry, leather and some red berry. Dry cherry and berry flavours and a dry light balanced finish.
This may be a little too elegant for me. (90 points)
Spring is finally here and we have some good porch weather. My wife pulled this wine as part of a blind yesterday. I don’t usually drink Brunello with pizza, but it’s still a fantastic match and we were pretty committed to pizza tonight when this wine was opened. Last pic is of a Bandol Rose that goes as well with the weather as the Brunello does with pizza.
Experimented with some fun pizzas last night! Had a couple domestic whites and some Italian reds to pair. No formal notes but some quick impressions on the wines
Championship Bottle 2023 New Walk Royer Vineyard Chardonnay: Excellent! Super crisp, citrus and saline. I am definitely a fan this is really great quality especially for the price (Kudos @Saul_Mutchnick )
Sandlands 2023 Chenin Blanc: Similar vibes to the wine above with a touch more acid. Both are great food wines
La Serena 2019 Brunello de Montalcino: Red fruited with some plum and leather, probably still needs some more time to incorporate
Quintodecimo Terra D’Eclano 2015 Aglianco: This was showing super well, rounder and dark fruit profile with tons of spices (cinnamon)
Solonero Nero di Troia 2016: When i graduated college I took a trip to Europe and this was the wine the got me interested in wine. I ended up tracking down a few bottles and its crazy to see how tastes change over time, this was dark and hedonistic but pretty much as I remember it. A fun trip down memory lane!
Thanks! Making pizza is super fun for me, i’ve been getting real into it.
The New Walk was on hand for the Pesto chicken pizza and the various white sauce pizzas (some of which had a tiny bit of kick). Generally I think white wine is pairing better with all sorts of pizza and food compared to reds lately. It doesn’t hurt that the weather is warming up around here either!
My last note still applies…
the 24 is crunchy bright, with more bitters in its youth…has that wonderful strawberry and raspberry fruit…wild sage bramble…screaming blood orange acidity…not much funk, yet!
Sounds great and I’ll keep my eyes peeled. Reportedly the winemaking at Cornelissen is much more conventional these days as compared to the earlier, more natural years, though I’ll say that my luck was actually fairly good with earlier bottlings. I was never buying at the high end, so cant comment on the Magma, etc., but I never had a really funky let alone spoiled wine from him. I know others had much worse luck!
Edit: Yes, that’s a Negroni. At La Felicita in Paris 13. La Felicita is an Italian food court that has a wood burning pizza oven. Excellent pizza and other delectables.
