Looking for something that has large enough rooms/ villas for a family of 4, pool for the kids and either walking or < 10 mins drive to dining options.
Hi Dinesh
We’ve stayed at Agriturismo val di Spinso in Santa Vittoria d’Alba and it might be a decent option for kids:
It has a pool, set in a lovely garden (my profile pic is the view of the castle from that garden!)
Spacious and modern apartments (ours were 2 bedroom each with a huge open plan lounge/dining/kitchen area)
Having an apartment with kitchen offers more flexibility than hotel timings, and although they do provide breakfast, it’s ok but not something I’d feel was obligatory
IIRC they had a dog and a couple of cats there, and indeed the 1-2 week old kittens made an appearance when we were there!
There’s a patio/bbq area that might appeal as a family mealtime special
There’s a castle in Santa Vittoria (setting for an old film with Anthony Quayle, called ‘The secret of Santa Vittoria’
There is an (unmanned) railway station you could walk to to go to Bra or indeed Alba, as a ‘something different’ day out
Whilst it might not be an appeal for every tourist, there is a long run of out of town large stores on the main road, about 5-10 min drive away. It’s useful for a large supermarket (Bennet IIRC), but also stuff like the excellent Decathlon sports store, plus plenty of other stuff. Not the romantic view of Italy, but nonetheless it’s part of the culture, and there might be stuff to appeal to the family that isn’t wine focused.
There are some restaurants there, walkable, but one is up such a steep hill that there may be complaints if they’re forced to walk up it. There’s also a modest alimentari, which nonetheless is handy.
It’s about 10-15 minutes drive to Verduno, then another 5 or so to La Morra. For the rest it might be worth staying on the main road (following the right hand turn before Alba)
(historic) Alba itself should appeal, and the market is decent, so worth going in that day. Some great food to pick up to take home in Alba, plus good choice for gelato
Across the driveway is a winery, but we didn’t taste any of their wines
Hi Dinsesh
Pre Covid, I think it was the year before the virus emerged. On that one we stayed in Serralunga, but have also stayed near La Morra, Monforte, Treiso and Corneliano d’Alba on previous visits, so happy to comment on them as well.
We stayed at Relais Le Roche last July and loved it. It’s a smaller property and somewhat quiet. has a beautiful comfortable pool and the property and service were excellent. It’s in a great spot right outside La Morra and very close to Bovia and Osteria Veglio. It’s also right near Bovia and Azelia if your going to be doing any tasting visits.
Plenty of room for the kids to run around as well. We loved it but it was just my wife and I.
Hey Matt, we were planning to around early Aug and a lot of the wineries were closed. So we decided to skip it and come back at a better time. It was a little weird because we drove from South of France to Lake Como and literally drove through Piedmont but didn’t stay.
FWIW while it’s comparing apples & oranges, we loved Lake Como.
Thanks! Any recommendations on what worked well (or didn’t) with the kids? I’m beginning to plan an extended stay in Europe next year and southern France and Lake Como is on our short list.
