Yes, absolutely. I agree that for subscribers of both publications the transition could have been handled better, but Chris is a class act. I’ve subscribed to WD for several years and it has become my favourite site.
He’s unquestionably the leading authority on wines from the whole Loire valley. As any TWI subscribers who are interested will find when they gain access to WD next week, his site is a mine of precious information about virtually every serious Loire producer, with thousands of tasting notes, but also guides to vintages in general, and to leading appellations.
As for Bordeaux, it wasn’t the reason I initially subscribed to WD, but there too there is a massive amount of precious information about each château and their wines and I have learnt to really admire Chris’s approach and his taste. Compared to LPB, I think his taste is more “classical”, but he’s open-minded about the type of Right Bank wines that probably appeal more to those with less classical tastes. In terms of approach to Bordeaux, Chris is probably the most ethically-conscious writer around, always quick to state who invited him to spend the night or eat dinner, etc, in order to avoid any possible accusation of conflicts of interest. Also, unlike some concerning EP 2024, Chris didn’t mince his words or give high scores in order to ensure good future relations with the châteaux - he was very clear about what he thought of the wines and the vintage.
Those who don’t know his work will probably have noticed his self-deprecating sense of humour in the TWI/WD announcement and will discover that this is a cornerstone of his work, making his reports all the more enjoyable to read.
One aspect I really appreciate is that Chris now always posts the ABV level of every wine he tastes, where available. I wish others would do so too.
So I think it’s great news for TWI subscribers. For WD subscribers, not so much, since there will be a big price difference after the first year, but well, it’s not the end of the world.
I’m not one of them, but I imagine there must be some people who are subscribers to both publications - will they get some sort of special offer?
Anyway, I wish TWI/WD all the best and hope the new partnership is a great success.
