Pretty interesting what they’re doing. I guess they’re experts in Bordeaux varietals so they are sticking with what they know. This property they’ve bought is in the Orcia DOC in the Val d’Orcia in southern Tuscany. Orcia’s neighboring DOCs are Montalcino and Montepulciano, both known of course for their Sangiovese based wines. Orcia DOC isn’t known for much, but what little there is Sangiovese.
The Daous are following their own path. I’m sure they’ve done their research, suggesting (I hope for their sake) that the soils and micro climate are appropriate for their varietals.
It will be a fascinating experiment. And maybe it’s all about knowing their customer and what they want.
I’m also curious what the locals think. Yay, Californians coming in with a ton of cash to make a beautiful new winery! Or is it, boo, Californians coming in with a ton of cash to make a hideous new winery.
