There are some classic comments here…Gary hated the 1945 Riscal and then loved it.

Here is a taste…“Malbec was an absolute disaster in France…”-Robert Parker

I like the guy in front of GV wearing the toupee!

Mel

He is the president of Rioja’s DO, Víctor Pascual.

Yeah, all those wines from Cahors totally suck. Is he kidding, forgetful or clueless? [scratch.gif]

i was waiting for someone to throw a shoe.

I got to say - it took some cojones to keep a camera running and pointed at the speakers when you’re sitting on the second row. It must have been obvious to the speakers. Go GV Go!

Painful to watch. I always feel a bit envious when I hear about people attending these tastings, but I doubt I could sit through the whole thing. [bye.gif]

Cheers!

Mel - I watched it this morning and all I remember is the toupee. Great minds…

Parker has lost weight but it’s time he ditched that comb-over.

Dude looks like a cross between Marv Albert and John Ashcroft.

Yeah Bob!
and Gary what were you saying… rolleyes

So GV’s there with the camera on Parker and with a quick pan we see someone off to the side with his camera pointed at Gary. That would have been hard not to notice from the stage. Classic !

GV uses a Flip which is not as obtrusive as a typical camcorder.

Parker sure does like to listen to himself, the translator had to cut him off at one point because he forgot to pause for her to translate, what a pro.

that tasting looked tedious. too much talking, not enough drinking.

the guy sitting to RP’s right appeared to be about as amused and interested as I was when watching this wine discussi- errr, tasting.

Do you guys think Parker was saying that Malbec as a whole was a disaster in FR or just in Bordeaux? Maybe he’s taken to swallowing instead of spitting…

Kevin Zraly, FYI. He served a purpose there. neener

I love wine. I am a real nerd. I could imagine sort of enjoying that if I was there. But watching a video on the Internet on this is like watching paint dry.

That Malbec statement statement was not very nice nor very respectful to Cahors.

Do you think that he was just thinking about Bordeaux and how not many people use Malbec much? Or does he dislike Cahors?
An honest question. He focuses a lot on BDX so maybe that is what he was thinking about?

I thought it was pretty cool that Gary took the camcorder in there to give us all a little peek into it.

Well why was he talking about Bordeaux varietals at a Chateauneuf du Pape tasting in Rioja and pouring random 1945 Rioja followed by young wines? It makes zero sense. None of it.

Call me an idealist and a Francophile. The longer I have been into wine the more I appreciate French wine. For every variety they grow, it seems that they have a terroir that offers a pinnacle expression of that variety. Cab, Merlot, Franc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris. Chardonnay, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurz, Muscadet, Gamay. And many more. Now I have not had a lot of Cahors, but the ones I have had have been charming and rustic. Why single those out to take a steaming crap on? Did someone from Cahors insult his dog at some point? “Absolute disaster?” I think his ridiculous overuse of hyperbole is a growing disaster.

It makes no sense… Actually, it does make sense if you just consider him as tired and jaded. I can find no other plausible explanation.

RMP, dude, find the joy. Not every wine needs to be 100 point blackberry jelly to be well made and enjoyable and representative of its place and its potential.
