Ovid 2010 release

Another expensive wine with a price increase for this release. Ovid is now $225 (up from $200 last year). Love this wine, but will continue to only buy the second label “Experiment” bottlings. Many others must be in that camp as the Experiment release sold out in less than 24 hours in the Spring.

Is this out now? I didn’t get an email. I wanted the Syrah in the spring but it went quick.

Just the main line Ovid bottling is in this release. Everything else is in the spring.

Love the wine but it is priced outside of what most working professionals can reasonably afford.

apparently I have been jettisoned after passing on the last two
225?
yawn
I’m all in at 175

The Ovid wines languish on the shelf in Tucson. Seems as if no one has heard of these expensive wines and are not interested in dropping the $$$ to explore.

A business associate just wowed me with a magnum of the 2010 Ovid release.

Can someone tell me more about this wine? Style? Recommendations on drinking window? Etc. I drink very little California Cab, but like that it’s a Bordeaux blend.

Wouldn’t consider drinking until 2025 or later. The 2005, in 750, is currently best day after opening.

You won’t like it, just ship it to me. [cheers.gif]

You would need a truck to move this thing. Comes in a muy fancy schmancy engraved box!

Kidding aside, some really beautiful packaging on this wine.

Reading the website, noticed the vineyards were planted in 2000. Pretty young vines. So what makes this wine so special (I say that based on critics ratings and apparent price, not on my tasting - I’ve only had one bottle, the '05)? Choice vineyards? Talented winemaker? Tell me more . . . .

Andy Erickson waaaaas the winemaker, now I think he just consults while Austin Peterson is making the wines. I believe he was with Andy from the beginning, but could be wrong.

That 05 was the first I bought from Ovid. I remember trying this right before the following year’s offer, thinking - decent, but what a rip off. Fast forward to 2013, and that wine is gorgeous, just a beautiful, expressive, singular expression of cab. A true stand out in the valley. Needless to say, I bought this '10, but will give it 7 or 8 years before popping one. This wine demands cellar time. This is one of the few Cali cabs IMO that doesn’t just hold with time, but actually improves - significantly.

I am with you Jody, just sadly outpriced now with a son and their increases.

I hear you Glenn. Sadly, I’ve been priced out of many Napa cabs. For the time being, I keep 3 as a splurge - Schrader, Shafer Hillside, and this (although I’m looking at VHR and Colgin as contenders for the #3 spot). Thankfully, there’s a decent selection of similar quality cabs at much more reasonable prices. There’s not a lot that competes at this level, but thankfully, TRB has a long client list…
