Overheard: I only drink white wine

Because “It has less acid than red wine.”

Probably a person who only drinks full bodied overoaked chards too.

Civilians often use words to describe wine without really understanding the vocabulary in this context. Acid and tannins, for instance, are often confused or conflated.

I was at a neighborhood Italian restaurant last night where the owner explained to my friend that she should drink white wine because red has sulfites

I think he might have been :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

I’m guessing the person was thinking of tannin when he or she said “acid.”

The mythology around sulfites in wine has an amazingly strong hold on casual wine drinkers. I don’t know how those misconceptions took so much root.

I have long since stopped trying to correct people, though. “I just came back from Europe. I loved drinking wine there, because it doesn’t have sulfites.” “Wow, that’s great, I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

I kind of know where that one is coming from, because some people have allergic reactions to sulfites and some people react to other things in red wines. It’s probably just confusion about what causes them to get stuffed up and whatnot.

I have a friend (no further identification will be made) who has “allergies” every time they exceed an ample sufficiency of wine. Current theory is to avoid whites because, guess what, they have sulfites.

Well, they tend to have more alcohol.

Umm…

Love the people who won’t drink Rieslings because they are too sweet but their go to wine is Kendall Jackson Chardonnay.

So many people still believe good Rieslings are sweet but none of them are applying the tasting process. When they swish it around in their mouth they now realize how good Riesling is. Of course then the prices will go up so we should probably not try to educate too many.

Umm…

Yeah. I liked that one too. I’m going to use it.

My wife has a friend who sometimes comes to visit who only drinks Cabernet Sauvignon.

He poo poos Bordeaux because ‘they are blends.’

He once thought a Roy Piper cabernet we served was ‘too smooth to be a real cabernet.’

There also only one good Scotch…which he brings with him and doesn’t like to share and I forget which one it is.

Robert Mondavi Private Selection Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon is the single best wine ever made, and why don’t other wineries emulate this?

She likes him, so I just smile and wave.
