My wife and I had a great visit to Chateau d’Yquem last September. We have loved their wines for a long time now, so it was a real treat to be able walk the grounds and tour the Chateau. I have written up a very extensive piece about our visit along with pictures. If you would like to see more, please check out our blog.
This is what we were able to taste at the Chateau:
2007 Ch. d’Yquem - Bright pineapple, spicy honey, dried apricot, good acidity, slightly cloyingly sweet. Very good length in the mouth, sweet and spicy on a very long finish.
This is an excellent Sauternes, but only okay for Yquem. This isn’t a knock-your-socks-off Yquem, but it was very tasty. I can’t wait to taste the 2009 Yquem, should be GREAT.
Cheers,
If you don’t mind my asking, what is involved in getting to visit the Chateau? Is it open to the public, or did you have some connection or introduction?
Thanks.
Hi Chris - We used a French travel company from Bordeaux to make all of our Chateaux reservations. The company that we used is Bordeaux Saveurs at www.bordeauxsaveurs.com
Cheers,
Hi Bob,
It has been awhile since I’ve been at a wine event with you and Christina - hope you are doing well! (The blog you linked looks great.) Visit to Yquem sounds…sweeeeet
.
Cheers,
Blair
Bob, do you happen to know what the oldest wine in their library is?
Thanks for your notes on your visit. A few years ago we had a great visit to Chateau Yquem with a guided tour by Sandrine Garbay, the winemaker, and lunch with Pierre Lurton and Dominique Renard. Such an historic estate - we were so fortunate to have seen one of my favorite Bordeaux chateaux.
Hi Blair - it definitely has been a very long time since we have been at a wine event with you. Where are you hiding? Things are good, we just get busy with the kids and all their activities. How are things with you? I hope all is well. The visit to Ch. d’Yquem was wonderful, love to go back. Thanks for the comments on the blog, we are trying to really create a fun space. Since we don’t see you often, I how you will follow the blog - feel free to comment on what catches your eye and we can chat. Best wishes, Bob
Hi Steve - No, I don’t know what the oldest wine in their library is. Do you by chance? I would love to know. 1967 is the oldest Yquem I have had and it was wonderful!
Hi Jerry - You obviously have more pull at Ch. d’Yquem than I do. Your trip sounds like a great experience. We loved visiting the Chateau, their history runs so deep. I already can’t wait for our next visit. I am not sure when, but it will definitely be sooner rather than later. Could you please tell me how you scored lunch with Pierre Lurton and Dominique Renard, so I can do it next time. ( -;
Cheers,
Steve - While I don’t know what the oldest wine in Chateau d’Yquem’s library is, we did see a lot of Yquem in the cellars of the other Chateaux in Bordeaux when we had the tours.
Cheers,
If you have been to the Chateau, what was the oldest bottle of Chateau d’Yquem you saw there?
