Drank some of these last year with Carole and Steve, and their 2002 still tasted super young, let alone anything younger. California syrah is the Pluto of ageable wine, it seems (not necessarily a bad thing!)
The one here in San Jose has/had Clos Apalta for $90, so I brought it to Christmas Eve to drink with my Chilean uncle. Super ripe, concentrated, beautifully aromatic with a depth and complexity rivaling the best of Bordeaux. Unfortunately, an hour in the oak overtook EVERYTHING and it was nothing but oak and cola. I think it would have come back around with more air, but we finished the bottle within 2-3 hours. Still very nice, will have to buy and 12-24 hour decant ahead of time.
opened it last night to make a pasta sauce and then had a glass afterwards. It was better than I expected. plenty of fruit for a young BDX. good tannins. slightly disjointed and should come together over time. Well worth $7. In some ways it was better than a 2016 Ch Pedesclaux ($60 AT TOTAL WINE) I had the other day.
My wife used to sell these wines. I think it’s all purchased fruit. Was tough for her to sell because the price points were too high. Modern styled wines. Probably a good deal at $14.
The 2019 Plantey was finally reduced at Roseville, MI. Bought multiples today at $10.97 each. In your experience is it going to materially improve with time?
Lots of mark downs on various lower tier wines to $5-10 each.
Likely not appreciated in this venue but 4 pack samplers of Dave Phinney Locations were marked down to $23.97. Bought a few for gift giving and cooking.
What a screaming deal! Congratulations on the nice get. None are left here in the DFW area.
My vague recollection is that cellaring would be helpful, but to be honest, Bordeaux under ~$25 don’t get tracked too carefully around my house. Formal or informal notes are rare and the bottles rarely get added to CT because they usually don’t last very long.
