We live 5 minutes from the Laguna Hills Costco and check the wine section every time we go. The Bordeaux selection has been thin lately.
Never seen a better wine selection at any other Costco, than Carlsbad. Happy hunting
I’m not really hunting the other stores now that the '19 Bordeaux splurge seems to be about done.
Carlsbad seems to be the best one.
You might try the Huntington Beach store at Bella Terra. The few times I’ve been there they seem to have slightly more interesting selections than the Fountain Valley store.
Another one to try if you’re on the 405 is the Long Beach store on Willow in the Signal Hill area. They had a solid selection of '19 Bordeaux my one stop there a couple months back.
St Charles IL store has 2020 Ch Barde Haut for $35
Try the Los Feliz costco - I was at the Burbank store last weekend and it was meh.
Chicago LP too.
Thanks for the notice. My home store. Will try to swing by tomorrow. Sounds like a wine worth trying.
4 and a half cases of 2019 Malescot at Redwood City now. 5 cases of 2020 Haut Batailley also showed up.
That’s a great illustration of 2019 versus 2020 at Costco. The 2020 is about at low WS-Pro, whereas the 2019 is a full 33%+ below WS-Pro low.
That has seemed to be generally how I’ve seen other 2020s and 2019s
Burbank
IMO, Van Nuys is regularly better. During the Grand 2019 Bordeaux Extravaganza I went to the Burbank store a couple times and was pretty impressed with their selection, too — better than what I typically see at MDR.
Damn. For a hot second I misread “Batailley” as “Bailly”, and got all excited … wish I could run into some of that '19 Malescot down here.
went to burbank and I guess the timing wasn’t good, not too much gems…
all Costco in S.Cal has crazy gas station lines…i mean, CRAZIER than my wife crazy
Colorado Springs has some 2019 as of a week or so ago. I bought up the Rauzan Segla. Tons of Giscours, Exupery, Duhart, Armhaillac, and a few others
Any Leoville?
The lines for gas are so bad I’m not sure one really saves much money going there, once time is factored-in.
There is a weird bug people have in their heads about gas prices, though. I’ve known people who will drive all over town looking to save 5 or 10 cents a gallon on gas, and things like that. And not people who are anywhere close to having their life affected in the slightest by the difference in a dollar or two at the gas station.
I’ve been known to buy additional wine bottles of wine I already have too much of because I could get a 10% discount… but gas, pffffff, come on. That’s just crazy.
I’ve had similar issues to others and mentioned before that interesting wines seem to have dried up during the pandemic. My Kansas City “Midtown” store missed on most of the great 2019 Bordeaux offerings (or they were barely on the shelf), but it was nice to see this 2021 Tornatore Pietrarizzo Etna Bianco pop up. It was finding wines like this that kept me excited about what was new at Costco, so I’m hoping they are finding their way out of the supply chain doldrums or are listening to annoying and grumpy customers like us .
Yyyyep. If one gets 20mph (not unusual for a gas-powered vehicle), and gas costs $5/gal, then gas costs 25 cents per mile. If one is filling-up their tank from empty, then we can assume they’re buying 20 gal. of gas (if not less). A savings of 10 cents per gallon, over 20 gallons, equals a whopping $2.00. If one drives 4 miles out of their way to the cheaper gas station, they are ultimately losing money: 4 miles out of the way to the station, plus 4 more miles back from the out-of-the-way station = 8 miles, which = $2. And then you add in the cost of time, plus very minor wear and tear on vehicle, and you’re in the negative.
Now, I generally try to go to the cheapest station on my route, but that’s it — it’s virtually-to-actually pointless to deviate from one’s normal route to “save money on gas.”
