Official Costco Thread

This year I noticed the Costco 2019 prices for Bordeaux was much better than any of the previous years that I’ve been buying wine from them. Not sure how they do it. As one poster said the Haut Brion was less than en primeur. Maybe my score of the year was Lafite and Pontet

I need to check my local Costcos this week! Those are some good '19 prices even if it takes a decade+ for drinking readiness

Seems fairfax doesnt have a case for highend stuff anymore. Not sure when that disappeared, last time saw it (hadnt been in there since covid) was right before covid hit and 08 Dom was $149…those were the days.

Holy smokes, that Pontet-Canet might be one of the best deals on wine I’ve ever seen! Is Costco buying from Rudy? Want to grab me the last three and ship it? :joy:

It looks like Costco is selling a lot of 2019 Bordeaux at great prices, though they are a bit higher than were broadly available en primeur. One guess - total speculation, of course - is that Costco locked in some sort of pricing en primeur, too, and are able to pass that on to customers. (Happy to be corrected on that if anyone has inside information.)

Incidentally, the 2019 en primeur is looking more and more like a great (and relatively rare and recent) example of prices being significantly better than official release, the likes of which we may not soon see again without some other unforeseen events or factors like COVID-19-- not that I’m hoping for such an external event again anytime soon.

Yes, they’ve been doing this for years, though seems to be more in some years than others. There was a feeding frenzy at Costco for 2000 Bordeaux when it came out, because they were selling many wines at en primeur pricing, on arrival, long after the scores had come out. I’ve got a decent amount in my cellar from those days

They do it every year, mostly thru MISA Imports.

Thank you, Kris and Alan, for noting that. For people like me who have only been looking at Bordeaux futures for a decade or less, the 2019 en primeur campaign stands out, as the difference vs. release pricing has been quite noticeable vs. what i observed in 2015, 2016, and 2018, for example. (Yeah, I know, that has probably been well-covered in other Bordeaux-centric threads.)

Pontet Canet was one of the first to come out with pricing in early 2020 for this vintage, and this was the price that I remember. Some may have purchased for $79.99.

Near West Side = South Ashland? They rarely have finds. LP is a bit better, but nothing like the CA Costcos.

Yes. The selection was better than LP earlier in the week. (It’s also not a total cluster to get into.)

I prefer it for everything except the alcohol selection, but I rarely buy alcohol at Costco so it doesn’t matter much to me.

You mean you aren’t in the market for a Napoleon XO brandy dragon?

No apologies. I was the same way buying in early 2000s, everyone talked about the prices in 1995, 1996, and 1998, then the 2000 vintage hit and prices went up, followed by more increases heading into the next VoC with 2005. The first break I saw was 2008 when it was highly touted, then followed by 2009/10 which made 2008 prices look benign.

2019 was the first real dip again in BDX after the pricing of 2014 - 2018 escalated and it was Covid. Funny that I look at most of my receipts and they were weeknights after 10pm PST when I ordered them since there was literally nothing to do. Thankfully my second childnis a 2019 so loaded up, and so did retailers at really fair prices including Costco. We used to broker all the wine in PNW thru MISA for Costco so I have seen quite a bit of it coupled with the fact thay Costco is capped by a 13.9% margin on wine/spirits it guarantees you a really great deal even though 99.9% of Costco Members can’t walk by a $500 bottle of Lafite fast enough.

Didn’t last long at that price. I waffled on the day I saw it because I bought the Lafitte and la mission and the next day Pontet was all gone. I had to call local Costco and have them track down the wine and there was none at any store but they told me they were expecting a shipment on a particular date and sure enough it arrived so I was able to get some bottles but in hindsight I should’ve bought everything they had. But can’t complain

Correct. That is the importer here is Dallas whose name I see on the back of a lot of bottles. Wasn’t sure if the BDX that’s sold by all USA Costcos is from Misa

If your Costco carries large formats or holiday packs, check the prices. Our Costco had many of them on clearance today.
For example, Dauzac Jeroboam was $90 off (but no bottles are left). The following 6-back of DBX was previously 99.99 and now 79.99
