Patz & Hall
The commitment to developing our relationships with many of California’s finest growers has become the cornerstone of the winery’s success, contributing to our acclaimed cuvées and our sought-after single-vineyard wines.
When we produced our first single-vineyard Chardonnay back in 1988, we were pursuing a vision of Californian wine that was distinctive yet inspired by the Old World. This inspiration always guided our winemaking decisions, but what truly animated us was the Burgundian-influenced conviction that single-vineyard, site-specific expression of terroir is the hallmark of all truly profound wines.
Nearly forty years later, we still hold this conviction, and as winemaker, James Hall has built lasting relationships with such renowned growers as Larry Hyde, Charlie and Bud Chenoweth, Gary Pisoni and Lee Martinelli to create an acclaimed portfolio of single-vineyard wines. In 2024, he moved to cement Patz & Hall’s legacy of crafting thrilling Chardonnay and Pinot Noir by repurchasing the winery from Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, and is now embarking on a new independent era for the winery.

About the Vineyards:
Bootlegger’s Hill: Planted in 2007 by renowned winegrower Charlie Chenoweth, this is the growing into one of the finest single vineyard Chardonnays in the Patz & Hall portfolio. Situated eight miles from the chilly Pacific Ocean, Bootlegger’s Hill is a very cool site, with shallow Goldridge soils that produce low yields of very small-berried clusters with high acidity. This wine was made entirely from a prized west-facing block of Hyde-Wente clone Chardonnay grown on 420A rootstock.
Burnside Vineyard: Burnside Vineyard is located just south-west of Sebastopol, on the corner of Watertrough Road and Burnside Road, in an area referred to by locals as the Sebastopol Hills. In one of the coolest areas in Russian River this awesome site is farmed by George Martinelli to a level of quality seen in very few vineyards in California. Goldridge sandy loam soils mark Burnside Vineyard as a superb Pinot Noir site, with a hillside orientation bending to the east for early morning sun exposure. Drawn from two blocks, one of Clone 115 and one of Clone 777, Burnside is an extremely low-yielding site producing very small, intensely flavored berries and clusters.
Gap’s Crown Vineyard: One of the Sonoma Coast’s great vineyards, Gap’s Crown was first planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2002. Located in the foothills of the Sonoma Mountain, above the Petaluma Gap, it offers a variety of soil types at elevations ranging from 300 to 800 feet. The prized sections we work with are on the flank of the mountain. They are two of the highest blocks on the vineyard and are planted to clones 667 and 828, in Goulding series soils, with some heavier clay interspersed with volcanic rock and lots of gravel. These soils are extremely well drained, and coupled with the site’s wind and fog, help to ensure low yields. Gap’s Crown is one of the last vineyards we harvest each vintage.
Hyde Vineyard: Purchased by Larry Hyde in 1979, and planted two years later, this renowned property is cultivated as 44 distinct blocks, and includes a veritable who’s who of the finest Pinot Noir clones. Our Hyde Vineyard Pinot comes from three small blocks within the larger Hyde Vineyard. These blocks spotlight new and older plantings of the famous Hyde-Calera selection, and include coveted grapes from the “old field,” which was planted in 1999.
Jenkins Ranch: Located about two miles south-west of Sebastopol on Pleasant Hill Rd. (in an area locally known as Sebastopol Hills), the 18-acre Jenkins Ranch is situated on a north-east facing hillside. Once an apple orchard, Jenkins Ranch features Goldridge series sandy loam soils planted mostly to Dijon selection 777 with a small block of 667. These vines were planted under the guidance of renowned vineyard manager Charlie Chenoweth in 2001. Though the site features cool coastal influences, its location one series of hills back from the Petaluma Gap offers a degree of shelter and warmth for the grapes.
Little Boot Vineyard: This is the fourth single vineyard bottling from this exciting newer site located near the town of Occidental. Planted exclusively for Patz & Hall by Charlie Chenoweth, one of the superstar viticulturists of the Sonoma Coast, the combination of Dijon and California Heritage selections of Pinot produce wine of rare energy and detail. Little Boot Vineyard is a cool site, due to its proximity to Bodega Bay, with shallow Goldridge series sandy loam soils.
Pisoni Vineyard: This famous vineyard is situated above the Salinas Valley near the town of Gonzales, in Monterey County. Perched on a sandy mesa, Pisoni is the benchmark for superlative Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands. Reflecting a perfect convergence of aspect, site and soil, it has consistently produced one of Patz & Hall’s most complex, extracted and amazingly intense wines.
Sanchietti Vineyard: Located west of Sebastopol on the Bodega Highway, the Sanchietti Vineyard was planted in 2009 to clones chosen by James Hall along with rootstock and trellising by vineyard owner and viticulturist Mark Sanchietti. Originally an apple orchard, this exquisite 12-acre property features some of the finest Goldridge sandy loam soils that we have ever tested. It is planted on an east-facing slope, in a location where the fog tends to dissipate earlier, ensuring lovely morning sunshine. 2017 was the inaugural vintage of this wine
