Occidental release today. Anybody buying?

I’m really on the edge with them this year…I bought last year but looking at the $125 pricing again this year along with the 4Btl minimum is giving me serious pause

Yeah to my knowledge it’s on the high end of the range for Sonoma but it’s a great wine.

If they have the demand they should sell it at the price they can clear it at. Many of us on these threads line up to buy other wines at multiples of the price why should Sonoma Pinot not see some love too!

I’d recommend anyone who likes this area to try wines from RM, Littorai, RAEN, Hirsch as well. A variety of styles and pricing but all nice representations of Sonoma Coast.

The 21s taste great btw; I had both the Catherine and Elizabeth bottlings at an event not long ago.

I was just looking at Eric Guidos reviews on Oregon Pinot and Chard. 2021 was a darn good year, but I guess I have not been paying attention The pricing is pretty high for the better wines. EG has the price posted for many of the wines. Was not familiar with 00 and they were pushing towards 200. 125 for the Occidental seems reasonable after looking over these.

I did buy a case of Occidental

There is always their entry level Freestone-Occidental available through retail only at 65 a bottle. But good luck finding any of the ‘21 now since it was named number two wine of year by wine spectator last month. This is the third year that prices held steady at 125, compared to all the Napa cab that has increased every year.

I don’t doubt the wines are good but that is why I poised the question. The only other wine I’ve had above that price was the 13 Marcassin pinot. It was one of the best pinots I’ve ever had.

I have had RM and RAEN, both have great pinots. I have also heard great things about Littorai. The reason I posed the question on price is the only pinot I’ve had that is more expensive than Occidental is the 13 Marcassin pinot and that was one of my favorite pinots ever.

I’ve noticed we buy from quite a few similar producers. I think you will like it.

Can you get another high quality Pinot for less? Sure. Will it be their’s? No.

It is tough doing the analysis without trying tons of wines, but in this case I think it’s worth the tariff.

I recently had a 2014 SWK and was really really impressed. Flavor-wise it really distinguished itself from the Sonoma pack. Medium weight red fruits filled in with fennel and spice notes and a fine balance of substance and acidity. Normally I find the coast wines either tasty but a bit threadbare, or extracted and samey. This was distinct in style and felt like it could go quite a bit longer.

Thanks Bryan I appreciate the insight! I already bought RM and Kutch and with BD I may have to pass for now, but will definitely keep my eye on it for the future!

I find it interesting and surprising that you see its style as distinct from the other Sonoma Coast wines. I find it stylistically to be very similar to, eg, much of the Hirsch range. I find the Occidental range to be significantly better in terms of overall balance and quality in comparison to the Hirsch range but stylistically I find them quite similar.

First time buyer - bought 1 of each to try them all out. Any suggestions on how long to hold before drinking?

BUY!!! . Right in my wheelhouse when it comes to Pinot and with 21 being spectacular in their neighborhood I went full allocation (2 - 1/2 cases mixed) Easy decision…

Their release email stated this is a vintage that can both be enjoyed young and cellared. I would pop one open and see if you agree.
