2020 Kontozisis Sun White Malagousia - The very pale color looks one year old, not five. The aromas are fresh, explosive and enticing, with hints of lemon, pineapple, cactus flower and sage. The palate has some weight, but is almost weightless, a characteristic of great wine. There is the tiniest bit of spritz. This offers amazing subtlety, with almost infinite layers of texture.
I know nothing about Malagousia; there may or may not be a relationship, biological and/or linguistic with Malvasia, but I’ve never had a Malvasia at this level of quality. Rated 95, probably mature.
I’m now discovering Greek whites myself. There are some outstanding ones and I’ll be posting more on the subject.
No relationship known to the Malvasia clan. iirc, the parentage is still unknown.
Was effectively extinct until Vangelis Gerovassiliou evangelized it after a few vines were found in the 70s.
Lovely grape.
The relationship between the 2 varieties is tenuous, at best, and unproven. If you can find any version of Gerovassiliou Malagousia, try it. Some interesting blends with mainland Assyrtiko, also. Cheers.
Looking forward to your posts.
Who was the importer Dan?
Umm, stoopid me, but I’ll find out tomorrow. I never saw the bottle, just ordered a half glass and then a full one.
The importer is Cava Spiliadis. They also import 2 of my favorite Assyrtiko’s - Canava Chrissou by Tselepos & the best off island Assyrtiko I have had which is with 50% Semillon. Its called Ovilos by Ktima Biblia Chora. All these names roll right off the tongue, dont they?
