There are 2 more that I donât see on anyoneâs list that I have enjoyed. One that just came in is Goldwater 2010. It just seems to have more layers of flavor than most. Also the Jules Taylor 2010 if you like the more aggresive style. I actually met her last summer when she was here in Oregon for IPNC.
Additional votes for Nobilo Icon (quality is better than the basic Nobilo) and for Wither Hills. I normally like Kim Crawford but didnât relish the 2010 vintage.
Suggest also Kono (produced by the Maori and very refreshing) and Crossings. Bedford Rock compared favorably to Cloudy Bay in past vintages but I havenât seen it locally in recent years.
One of my family members loves NZSB (Nobilo, Matua etc) as well as Joel Gottâs SB, so we tried the 2019 Nobilo âIconâ SB [Marlborough] yesterday. Screwcapped as most things from the nation is. I thought it was kind of watery, dilute - but the others liked it. Maybe itâs just too chilly nowadays (50F here) to be drinking these now. Unf this family member wonât drink reds.
In this space, even though it costs more, Iâd rather have Cloud Bay over this.
Found Clos Henri at Costco late last month for ~$16 and am very happy with it, something almost old world about it, less fruit-forward, grassy, and cat pee, more minerality and structure compared to its Marlborough friends on the shelves next to it. Definitely a top contender for my tastes.
Some good suggestions here, and picking out s coup, of lists semi-random, Robertâs is a good one for something similar, perhaps better, for the same money or less. Claytonâs list is a great one for exploring, and I absolutely agree with them offering subtly different takes on the genre if that interests (including wild yeasts, some subtle barrel influence etc.)
