NYC - September 23rd Blind Wine Tasting Dinner -- GSM Not From France

When: Monday, September 23rd 5:30 sit down and do their blind white wine flight. The tasting dinner will commence at 6pm. I’ll get there at 5pm if anyone gets out early; we will order a bottle of Champagne off their menu then.

Requirements: This dinner is about GSM (Grenache / Syrah / Mouvedre) wines, blends or single varieties, not from France. For this dinner, please bring two bottles, they can be a blend of all three, or only one, or a majority of them with some other grapes as well (ie: some Saxum and SQN will add small amounts of other grapes which are all completely acceptable; many Syrahs add Viognier in small amounts, again totally acceptable). Aussie Shiraz or blends of majority Shiraz are also 100% acceptable and encouraged. Anywhere in the world is allowed, except France. No dessert wines for the pairing, but if you feel the need to bring a third wine, no one will complain. Let’s keep this high quality.

Where: Corkbuzz 13 e 13th street (Union Square)

How: When you arrive, please ensure the bottles are concealed (in a bag or aluminum foil or something to cover them). The target amount of people for this dinner will be 11-12, once you go above 12 it can get too unruly, and there won’t be enough wine for each person. Each person will pass their two bottles around and the group will taste them and try to determine what they are–if your bottle shape is extremely unique, ie: SQN, Insignia, etc, please either decant them or move them into a different bottle. Once everyone has tried them we will guess what the grape, region and vintages are. The wines will be revealed each time after the round of guessing. How formal or casual your guesses are will totally be up to you; WSET, CMS, or just winging it are all fine…

Cost: The cost is expected to be around $150. This includes free corkage, and gratuity. They provide all the stems, excellent service and great food.

Why: This dinner is because Jay keeps saying he has too much “California Rocket Fuel” and it’s GSM, so here we are catering to the man himself… don’t say I don’t do anything for ya Jay

Several people have DM’d me already about this event, so the list has already started. We’ll get a proper list and waiting list started soon.

I don’t think I have any CA rocket fuel that would suit this, but I am excited to dig around and see what I can bring. I’m in!

@gavin.f no shade… just gave them the spotlight last time, don’t want them to think they are all that and a bag of chips. Gotta let the rest of the world shine.

Would love to join that one…

Best available on the draft board

I have been asked if it is ok to break the rules (bring a French one) if it’s a third bottle, and yes, if you want to be generous with three bottles, then the rules will allow for that.

I need to be a maybe for now. Have a planned work trip that week - will confirm as soon as I can.

Ah man, this seems like a wonderful evening. Too bad I’ll be landing in NYC a month late!

I’m in town and might have some of this stuff lying around. Count me in.

My uncle collected wine from at least he Frank Prial days (early 1970s) until he died about 8 years ago and he had about 130 bottles in his collection at the end. He assigned me the responsibility of dividing it between my two sisters, my three cousins, and me. I created six sub-lists and gave everyone a choice, with me choosing last. I ended up with a wine that I had never heard of from an odd region that he got from Calvert and Woodley in DC. It fits this theme and is was valued at some ridiculous price. I have emailed the US importer and the winemaker is perhaps eccentric, perhaps a genius, I will let you decide.

Still have a few more seats…@Dan_A @Juliec @Dinesh_Goyal @jzhang

@J_a_y_H_a_c_k you brining an entourage this time?

I have some bottles in the stash that would fit this bill well. It would be my first Berserker offline. Would love to meet everyone if there’s still a spot?

Count yourself in… will be good to meet you. @Jesse_W

Looking forward to it!

Room for 1 more @Juliec

Can I get a spot for my friend Juan? Can I just bring two magnums, one for each of us?
