Peking Duck House - the duck is not necessarily the best, but reasonably good. Byob allowed.
Wu’s Wonton King - there’s a large enthusiastic followers by local winegeeks; ironically, wonton dishes are not what you order here.
Potluck Club - Hong Kong style Chinese with restaurant themed on Hong Kong pop culture (Bruce Lee, etc.). Trendy, yet the foods nicely keeps up.
Love the thread, Will be there as well, I usually just wonder around, find some cool markets and such, curious of the responses.
We were in NYC recently and had dim sum at House of Joy. I thought it was quite good and my better half, who is Chinese-American, agreed, adding that it was quite authentic.
Order the live crab!!!
And byob.
The crab has gotten crazy expensive.
i find wu’s to be maddeningly uneven. it can be fun for a big wine group, but i’d never recommend it for anyone coming from out of town.
Uncle Lou’s.
At Ping’s you get a comparable quality to Wu’s for about 1/3 less the cost. Stemware not great. Call ahead about corkage I think it was $15-20 last time I was there.
Canton Lounge is also good and stemware there also not so good. Call for current corkage.
Aren’t you in France right now?
Trust me, you can afford the crab!
I’m back. Try convincing others I dine with to open their wallets.

We spent a few days in NYC this spring checking out Chinatown and found the food mostly not great. We did find one food court that was quite good and had decent dim sum, hainanese chicken rice and other nice options. We went to a breakfast place that was thoroughly bad, and went to one other dim sum place that was only decent. I think Flushing is a much better option in terms of getting good Chinese food in NYC.
wading in and i’m far from an expert, but we’ve had a bit of a renaissance in the category here in NYC over the past few years, but rarely in chinatown.
off the top of my head, destination-worthy places:
Uhlu
Chili (former Cafe China space which i think is better than Cafe China now)
August Gatherings (in C-town)
Szechuan Mountain House
this is the tip of the iceberg - i’ve been remiss in exploring off the island. hopefully others with more experience chime in.
