NYC : Bartolo vertical

Just wanted to see if there is an interest in doing a vertical of Bartolo Mascarello.

Details (date, venue) to be ironed out but probably in May

Hey Dinesh,

Thanks for the heads up. I’d be interested. I have most vintages from past 20 years or so. I may be out of town for part of May but I should be around on weekdays for most of the first week or two of the month (I know I’ll be around May 1-5, May 8) and I’ll also be around late April. Other dates TBD on my end.

I had a good corkage experience recently at Hawksmoor, good service and nice table for a bigger group and they do $10 corkage on Monday. If Monday May 1 or 8th end up working for folks that could be a good option that’s both high quality and economical.

Great.

I know Hawksmoor guys pretty well and had recently arranged a 2019 Bordeaux tasting there too.

I have only recently started buying Bartolo and late to the party. Have 2013 and by the time the Dinner comes around maybe 2008 too.

Let’s lock in the exact date once we have a group.

I have 2 friends who are fans of Mascarello and would like to join. One is highly likely in and available most of May, the other might have to be TBD due to his schedule.

Great.

I will see who else responds to this thread. I will in a couple of days start an email chain with everyone who’s interested and we would start locking in the details.

All, I will get an email thread out in the next few days or so to coordinate the event. Starting point will be figuring out a date.

@Stephen_Chen @Joseph_Grassa @AaronR - I already have your email address.

@Rob_M1 @Diane_Kessler @B_Caputo @JFertitta @R_Frankel - could you please pm me your email address? Thanks.

This dinner is now all set for May 18th. We are currently at a group size of 10. Happy to add folks to the wait list.

So far we have 2015, 2013, 2012, 2009,2008,2005 and 1967 and waiting for a couple of people to confirm.

Looking forward to it.

Hey Dinesh - i wasn’t able to make the event due to travel if you remember…was curious if you had notes on the wines or if anyone had notes on the wines?

Jeff, I unfortunately don’t. Just recall that 2008 was WOTN for the group.

@AaronR @Stephen_Chen @Joseph_Grassa may have it.

I have been slacking pretty hard in 2023, so there are no formal notes from me sadly, but I here are some pics.

We are missing a pic of the last flight 2004 Monprivato and the 2013 Bartolo.

The wine of the night was the 2008 with 5 votes, followed by 2005 with 3 votes and 1 each for the 2013 and 1967.

Both the 2008 and 2005 were similar in fruit which were darker and more in line with the 89 in profile. The 89 may not have been it’s best showing though, or it may sadly be getting past it. We were quite lucky that the 67 was in good shape, but it was a bit too tertiary for most. It still showed some red fruit, more red when compared to the rest besides, interestingly enough, the 2004 Monprivato.

The only one I can give any real notes on was the 67 because I sampled it twice during the hours of aeration and because it was my personal favorite. On the nose there were mushrooms and rose pedals. The palate brought on strawberries and orange peel giving the wine its freshness. Mushrooms continued to be salient, but complimented by earth on the palate. The wine was slightly ferrous and also had a spice that I had trouble pinning down. Fennel? Cinnamon? Not quite licorice. Slightly less rustic than fennel, and slightly less sweet than cinnamon. It grew to be an important part of the wine as it evolved.

The food was very good as well. They allowed us to pick a few primi that they split up on each plate so everyone could sample a few things. I loved the truffle mushroom ravioli and also the risotto.
