“If you’re not familiar with the wines, I can’t suggest strongly enough that you familiarize yourself with them.” -Allen Meadows, Burghound

La Soufrandiere by the Bret Brothers

No other newer producer is hotter out of the Becky Wasserman portfolio right now than the Bret Brothers - Biodynamic farming masters that are only in their 40s! Burgundy does not have to be bonkers expensive to be great, you just need to know where to look! Most of these wines are only available at specialty retailers like us and we are priced the best on most of these! The Quarts and la Bonnode items below VERY LIMITED!

The difference between the wines labeled “Bret Brothers” and “Soufrandiere” are that the Bret Brothers wines are negociant fruit from vineyards they do not own, while Soufrandiere are from their own estate vineyards. My pet favorite here is the Grand Pere, it excels in years like 2022 as it is a cooler site! But, all of the wines are excellent, including the Julienas Beaujolais Cru that hits the mark and a rare, tiny production Aligote!

Leaders in biodynamic viticulture, these 3 brothers are setting the standard for farming in Burgundy as everyone is now going in this direction. These guys started in 2001 as biodynamic and have not looked back! Proof is in the bottle here as it is with many Burgundy producers that have or are currently converting over to certified or practicing biodynamics. Virtually all the wines they touch are Demeter certified for biodynamics.

• All wines certified Organic (EU) & Demeter certified Biodynamic
• 100% hand-picked grapes (no machines)
• micro-cuvées that correspond to the vine plots (no generic appellation wines)
• 100% yeasts naturally present on the grape
• no chaptalization nor acidification
• vinification in traditional 6–18 year old casks or stainless-steel vats
• low use of sulphites
• maturing on lees, 11–17 months depending on cuvées (long elevage)
• natural corks (no synthetic, washed corks)

William Kelley, Robert Parker WA
*"*The Bret Brothers’ négociant house is a fine source of elegant, classy Mâconnais wines derived from fruit that’s either organically farmed or in organic conversion and deftly vinified by this talented and industrious duo. Fermentations with ambient microflora, long élevage and discretion with oak are the order of the day at this address. More concentrated than the giving, open-knit 2018 vintage, the 2019s at this address nonetheless avoid the potential excesses of the year, too. Seamless and nicely balanced, it’s a fine success.”

*"*Domaine La Soufrandière is the family estate of dynamic brothers Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret, where they produce beautifully satiny, pure wines that are reliably flavorful and expressive. Organically farmed and picked by hand, the grapes are whole-cluster pressed before fermentation in barrel, with the wines frequently finishing their élevage on the lees in stainless steel to preserve tension.”

Bettane and Desseauve’s Guide to the Wines of France
“There seems to be no stopping the Bret Brothers!..Disciplined viticulture and ambitiously precise vinification puts these two young men leagues ahead of the competition and promises to keep them there”

I’ve had a few of their wines and they are quite good.
Unfortunate name though ,.,

I agree on the name. We all joke about the name here, but the proof is in the bottle. And good quality White Burgundy at a great price.
