Went to a dinner down here in Palm Beach on Friday. More Lobel’s beef than you can imagine and a ton of great wine… I didn’t take formal notes, but many of there were quite memorable…
2005 Chateau Puligny Batard Montrachet, Burgundy, France - Lovely white, not showing over-ripeness, balanced and elegant.
2004 Drouhin Marquis de Laguiche Le Montrachet, Burgundy, France - from Magnum. Outstanding. A long, complex finish. Filled the mouth. Nice bright acidity, excellent texture and balance.
2004 Bouchard Le Montrachet, Burgundy, France - from Magnum, another excellent Montrachet. A long finish and a nice contrast to the Laguiche. A bit rounder and less minerally, but it again a rich, mouth-filling texture
2000 Comte de Vogue Musigny, Burgundy, France - soft, supple, slightly advanced fruit notes, correct, nice, but outclassed by the others.
1991 Comte de Vogue Musigny Burgundy, France - ripe vintage qualities, good acidity with herbal and berry notes.
1991 Comte de Vogue Bonnes Mare, Burgundy, France - Similar to the 00 Moose… it was nice, it had good components and was nice to drink. A bit reserved and tart on the finish.
1991 Leroy Clos Vougeot, Burgundy, France - stunning wine, one of my favorites of the evening. Incredible nose, powerful and deep, elegant, balanced with an extended finish…dark berry fruits, a hint of spice and flowers, wonderful
1991 DRC Romanee St Vivant, Burgundy, France - I know I tasted it, but I don’t have an impression…
1991 Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze, Burgundy, France - both the 91 and 93 were excellent… dark berry fruit, mild spice, a little bit of game and brush on the nose and palate. I liked the fruit and structural components of the 93 a little better. Very good.
1993 Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze, Burgundy, France - see above
1993 Comte de Vogue Bonnes Mares, Burgundy, France - no recollection
1995 Comte de Vogue Bonnes Mares, Burgundy, France - no recollection
1978 DRC La Tache Burgundy, France (2 btls) - amazing… so much so that somebody was kind enough to go intot he cellar and pull a second, equally lovely bottles. Amazing nose of flowers, asian spice and mature berry fruit. Soft and elegant on the palate. A bit of wildness, crush leaves and typical notes of maturity…balanced, elegant and simply amazing. One of the best wines of the night.
1995 DRC La Tache, Burgundy, France - corked, dumped, bummer…
1990 Ponsot Griotte Chambertin -surprisingly nice… ripe fruit, excellent balanced with firm, but soft tannins, just the right balance of acidity… excellent
1996 Jayer Cros Parantoux, France - I am not a fan of 96’s in general, but this one is position changer. Everything about this wine was great. Color, nose, balance, texture, richness, finish. A real treat to enjoy… I thought it was special.
2004 DRC La Tache, France - had a small taste of this at the end of the night. Was looking for green notes, couldn’t find them, it was young and primary as struck me as typical VR… need to come back to this one in several years.
2005 DRC RSV??? - I think it was an 05, I think it was an RSV, I know I was pouring it…I have no idea if I tasted it…
Bordeaux’s
1947 Chateau Pichon Longueville, Pauillac, France - I am told this wine was prior to the split between baron and lalande. It was a magnum and somehow I confused then end of WWII and 1947, but getting passed that embarrassment… the wine was lovely… showing all the secondary and tertiary notes of age, yet still had some youthful expression of its fruit. Enjoyed. From Magnum
1947 Calon Segur Saint Estephe, France - From Magnum… No recollection
1961 Chateau Leoville Poyferre, St Julien, France - Really youthful, surprisingly nice… would have like a whole glass with my steak…
1966 Chateau Pichon Lalande, Pauillac, France - not a good year, seen better days
1970 Chateau Gruaud Larose, St Julien, France - from mag, another shocker…vibrant, fresh, elegant and balanced…a real surprise…
1978 Chateau Cos d’Estournel, St Estephe, France - no recollection
1988 Chateau Pichon Lalande, Pauillac, France - did not taste
1995 Chateau Pichon Lalande, Pauillac, France - did not taste
1986 Chateau Lynch Bages, Pauillac, France - showed well, beef blood and dark berry fruits, firm tannins, but enough fruit and acid to carry them. A bit on the dry side, but quite enjoyable
1990 Chateau Pichon Baron, Pauillac, France - brilliant. Ripe, elegant and balanced fruit, powerful nose, mouth coating texture…love love love this wine…
1990 Chateau La Conseillante Pomerol , France - another stunner… advanced fruit notes, amazing texture, lovely balances and soft, velvety tannins… another great bdx
1996 Chateau Haut Brion Pessac-Leognan, France - did not taste
1989 Chateau Latour, Pauillac, France - did not taste
1982 Chateau Margaux, Margaux, France - Perfection. Such an amazing wine. I am not a huge fan of the 82 for drinking today (I don’t like how they have matured) but this was a major exception. Completely balanced…
1991 Chateau d’Yquem, Sauternes, France - did not taste
1990 Chateau d’Yquem, Sauternes, France - did not taste
There were a bunch more d’yquem pulled out… one from the 50’s another from the 70’s…I saw them going around, but by this time I had given up my sommelier duties and sat down to dinner and finished off the Jayer, Margaux and Ponsot. I think there were a few more burgs opened, but I stopped taking pictures and writing them down earlier…
A really great night… met some great people, saw some good friends… excellent plus
