Some Nicolas Rossignol 2008 wines have become available for a discounted price locally as they are clearing out to make room for 2009 and 2010. I read good things about the estate, but have no personal experience. Does anyone have experience with this producer? thanks.
About three years ago I tasted a number of his 2002 and 2005 Volnays, IIRC the Taillepieds, Cailleret and Chevret. While the material seemed good, I found the obtrusive oak notes & flavours too sticky & caramelly. I freely admit to having a low tolerance for that sort of thing, so your mileage may vary.
John,
I do not have a lot of experience, however, I went long 2005 & also bought some 2008,s and 2009’s. His oak regimine has changed over time - when Bobby K was importing the wines he insisted that he use lots of new oak - then Martine was bringing in the wine (including the 2005 vintage) and he dialed the oak back - now I am not sure who is importing the wine but I think Martine dropped this from their line-up. His disagreement about the amount of oak did lead to his split from BK.
I bought heavily in 2005 across the entire range of 1er cru Volnay’s but have yet to crack one - I did so on the high reccomendation of Kevin H who really enjoyed the wines and thought they had nice transparency. I did enjoy his basic bourg - and my in-laws liked his 05 Village Volnay which unfortunately I did not get to sample on release. Burghound as I am sure you are aware did review his 08’s and 09’s generally very positive with very different drinking windows.
Thanks for the note on the 99 Clerget I also bit in these from the same source I am sure but have yet to sample one - based on your note I am inclined to let them sleep for a bit. I also purchased the 91 Morot - have one on deck!
Thanks Mike and Bill. Coates, I think, said he started out oaking and overextracting, but has dialed way back. I went for some Chevret, Clos des Mouches, and Clos du Roi 2008, so we’ll see.
