Nice 96 Estate Riesling Kabinett from the Rheingau!

TN:1996 Schloss Schonborn Estate Riesling Kabinett Rheingau.

Just released by the winery, $26 Cdn, 8.5% alc, great natural cork. A.P #
31 052 028 97. Opened for half hour, first tasted in Nov when sales manager was in Alberta.

The color is verging on a medium gold. Hints of petrol on the nose along with some mineral tones, peach, lemon. The nose is still active after being opened 2 days.
Initial entry thoughts were, full-mature, very good acidity with RS balanced nicely. I feel that this wine is at its peak so good timing by SS.
White stonefruit, apricot, long citric finish. I had to serve fairly chilled as it was too cloying for me when warming up.
I am a big believer in leaving my German wines in the cellar (sometimes too long!) so nice to grab this wine right off the shelf downtown. Very enjoyable.

Schonborn makes some good juice, indeed … thanks for the note. [basic-smile.gif]

That is a really keen price for what is a good wine from a quite grown-up, but vastly under-rated, vintage. All the decent German 96s I have tried recently have been bursting with life (in the form of livid acidity and pronounced minerality). The kabinetts are charged with an electrifying intensity. Thanks for the note!

Cheers,
David.

Thanks for the interest, appreciate it.

David, where in London are you? Have you been to the Sampler in Islington?

Bob ex Ealing Broadway!

Hi Bob,

I’m in horrible, horrible Woolwich out in the dark depths known only as Zone 4. It is a bit of a drag getting from Zone 4 into central London, but if there is a wine merchant or restaurant I want to visit it is worth the effort.

I’ve been to The Sampler a few times, they have the brilliant Cedric Bouchard/Roses de Jeanne Champagnes, but I am yet to try their wine-by-the-glass machines.

Cheers,
David.
