*Newbie* - South Africa's New Wave: The Winemakers You Need to Know - free shipping and 15% off

This is my first Berserker Day, and I am STOKED! Crazy enough, I wrote this offer while on a safari in South Africa a couple of weeks back. What other region in the world can you drink world-class wine and hang out with elephants?! (hint: only one!)

Culture Wine Co. is the ONLY importer, wholesaler, and retailer in the USA that focuses exclusively on South African wine. I founded Culture to share the exciting changes taking place in the South African wine industry produced by a young generation of winemakers focused on clean natural wines as well as organic, biodynamic, and regenerative farming methods.

I regularly travel to South Africa to continue broadening my knowledge on this diverse (and often complicated) country. These producers have spearheaded the country into producing the best wines in its history and are exclusively represented in the US by Culture. I couldn’t be prouder to share them.

Offer 1 wines: Introduction to South African Wine Bundle

Van Hunks Cap Classique Brut, Stellenbosch (Non-Vintage)

70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir. Cap Classique is the South African term for sparkling wine made in the Champagne Method, where the second fermentation is done in bottle. The country LOVES its bubbles, and produces richly textured, mouth-coating sparklers, like Van Hunks. Notes of golden apple, honeysuckle, toasted brioche, pistachio, and almonds shine – and last for quite a while. The texture is spot on, too. The extended lees-aging gives a creaminess that coats the palate adding wonderful complexity far beyond the finish. The wine is quite dry, coming in at 6.4 g/l of RS.

2023 Maanschijn Herbarium Cape White, Walker Bay

40% Sauvignon Blanc from Maanschijn Klein River Saltwater Lagoon Vineyard; 22% Semillon from Sunday’s Glen; 21% Chenin Blanc from the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley; 17% Chardonnay from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. This wine is deliciously captivating with incredible layering of flavors. Although the wine is perfectly knit together, you can taste each component individually. Grapefruit from the Sauvignon Blanc, yellow orchard fruits from the Chenin, grassy hints and salinity from the Semillon, and a lusciously rich texture from the Chardonnay. This wine unfurls in many ways making every glass interesting.

2023 Scions of Sinai Atlantikas Pinotage, Stellenbosch

100% Pinotage. This grape, which is a cross between Pinot Noir and CInsaut, was created in South Africa in 1925. Today, nearly all the world’s Pinotage grows there, making it the unofficial trademark grape of the country. Atlantikas is only 12.5% ABV, bone-dry, and the most perfect introduction to the varietal that one can have. Pale ruby in color, it shows notes of red cherry, rose petal, mint, brambly berries, and a very subtle hint of bitterness in the finish. This gives the perfect bit of nuance and makes the wine exceptional for anything grilled. Drink this cellar temp or even with a slight chill. This is THE wine that pushed me over the edge to launch Culture Wine Co. I think Scions of Sinai Atlantikas Pinotage embodies all the positive changes happening in South Africa today: regernative farming practices, lighter and fresher styles of wine produced, and a completely new (and better) way for Pinotage.

Offer 2 wines: Luddite Wines Single Vineyard Duo

2023 Luddite Wine Chenin Blanc, Bot River

100% Chenin Blanc with 25 days of skin contact during and post-fermentation. It is deep amber in color, but bone-dry and very clean. This is not the funky, oxidized, cloudy ‘natty’ style of orange wine. It’s a serious, single vineyard, dry-farmed gem that is one of the greatest Chenin Blancs made anywhere the world with tremendous depth of flavor. Produced from estate-grown grapes in the heart of Bot River, the Luddite Chenin is fermented with native yeast, to retain the inherent acidity and freshness of fruit.

Tasting Note:

Luddite Chenin is the gift that just keeps on giving. It is richly textured with savory fynbos and salinity notes, apricot, tangerine, and passionfruit. The nose offers a beautiful mix of fruit - pear, apricot, and peach - while savory notes such as fynbos and salty ocean air add beautiful depth. On the palate, the Chenin offers a beautiful texture with impressive weight and mouthfeel, especially considering its low alcohol content. The finish is marked by flavors of white fruit, spice, and a subtle salty minerality.

2021 Luddite Wine Shiraz, Bot River

100% estate grown and dry farmed. The wine shows dusty earth, dried herbs, fynbos brush (think Chaparral found along northern California coastal trails), blackberries and hints of fennel. The palate is remarkably textured and velvety smooth with super fine-grained tannins. Only 750 six-packs produced!

Tasting Note:

Aromatically, the wine shows dusty earth, dried herbs, fynbos brush (think Chaparral found along northern California coastal trails), blackberries and hints of fennel. The palate is remarkably textured and velvety smooth with super fine-grained tannins. It lingers on the palate for minutes. This is truly one of South Africa’s best Shiraz’s. Having tasted some wonderful, mature vintages of this wine, we can honestly say, if you age this, it will reward you as well as the best Hermitage or Côte-Rôtie.

So… Why South Africa?

South African wine accounts for less than 1% of all US imports today! Yikes, that’s low. In my 15 years working in the wine trade, rarely has South African wine been a topic of discussion and never have I seen it as a focal point of an importer’s portfolio or a retailer’s shelves. I assumed this lack of representation told the whole story, that it reflected the quality of its production, its place in the industry.

Then, I took a trip to South Africa. I discovered a booming industry, full of incredibly passionate and skilled producers, and a warm community dedicated to crafting exceptional wines. My perspective was broadened profoundly, and I was left with the question: Why was no one championing these wines?

The current South African wine scene is innovative and energized, but what sets it apart from others is its collective dedication to fostering an open, inclusive wine culture. It is inspiring to witness the camaraderie, the willingness to share knowledge, and the support this community gives.

My goal is to bring the best of South Africa to the US and that you’ll fall in love with the wine, people, and culture like I have. I hope you’ll enjoy the new wave of South African wines as much as I do!

I was fortunate enough to discover Peter via a discussion on SA wines here on the Board. He is very serious about South African wine (not to mention very knowledgeable).
In addition, he’s also responsive and enthusiastic about all his products.
Buy with confidence, for sure.
