very good read that touches on this thread and several others related to all things wine at restaurants…

any of you cool dudes going on 10/5? i strangely have the afternoon free. i doubt my wife would mind if i get obliterated before we go out for her friend’s birthday party later that night.

def want to stop by myself.

Sadly I am going to be in LA. Chase really gets it and it is why his place(s) are so successful.

Oh wait that’s a lie. Apparently I can’t read today. Still - seems like a great time.

I would have loved to attend but I’ll be in San Diego at that time. I miss these kinds of events…

I live in the area and as I walked by about 4:15 I tried to wrangle my family into waiting for a standby table. They weren’t up to it so it didn’t happen. Close encounters!

Hello, I have a group of 9 wanting to go to a nice less formal restaurant that is lively and has pretty good wine. I know most posts here are on the expensive side but any reasonably priced places that are less fancy. Oh yes and not Chinese please: Does anyone have any recommendations?

David

Anton’s might work.

Noreetuh. Can’t beat the wine list.

does chambers fit the bill? its kind of mid-priced by today’s standards and obviously you dont get a better wine list in nyc.

Had what I would call a perfect meal at Penny on Tuesday night with my wife and daughter. When your two biggest nits that you have to pick are that you love the music they are playing in the dining room but don’t like the music playing in the bathroom and that the glassware while very good is too narrow at the opening to really get your nose in there, you know it’s a hit.

Had the Ice Box Plus. I generally prefer oysters to clams, but these clams were outrageous. Razor Clams to die for and the shrimp cocktail which I normally find boring was perfect. Trout with lovage was perfectly cooked and the sauce had an incredible depth of flavor. Oysters confit with creme fraiche and crackers! Wow. Just wow. Could have eaten a second and third portion of them. We had the tuna carpaccio which was also excellent. We almost never order dessert but shared a wonderful ice cream sandwich on brioche. Service was exactly how I like it…informal but precise.

Wines were the 2022 Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Blanc and the 2022 Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Blanc Les Mechalot. Both really good but I prefered the Pataille.

This wasn’t an inexpensive experience, but one that I highly recommend.! Pix aren’t that good cuz the lighting made it tough.

PS. The AC was sufficient.

wow! well done.

love that they’re running with this Troisgros riff. whomever suggested those 2 wines knows juice.

LOL. I said to one of our servers that I was interested in some wines that I didn’t see on the list and he asked me which ones. I just showed him the text and he was like “oh…you know Yaacov” and then he went in the wine room and brought out the freezing cold iPad that contains the full list.

Dear Robert,

Thank you for recommending the Hawaiian restaurant which looks fun. The only issue is one of our people is got humongous allergic reactions to food and intermixed food like Chinese and Japanese to a degree with soy sauce and pans and all that stuff seems not ideal and Hawaiian looks a little bit like that. That restaurant looks really cool though so I think I’m gonna go sometime thank you.

I see you posting all the time. Is there any other live not stuffy restaurants that aren’t a fortune for eight or nine people you’d recommend?
