New York City Restaurants

Seems like a more casual, party-esque atmosphere. I prefer a casual atmosphere where I can actually talk to folks I’m hanging out with. If I’m ever in the areas, I’ll try to check it out, but seems a bit different than the atmosphere I look for in places

What’s the best old word wine bar in Manhattan, (not natural wines). I’ve looked at Aldo Solm, but $40/glass for village Meursault seemed high- can I do better , perhaps downtown?

Food not too important.

If you find one I would love to know. My recommendation would be to go to the bar at The Grill. There are some crazy deals on that list.

You can find some old world selections at Parcelle.

Same for the Swan Room in 9 Orchard which is right around the corner from Parcelle, it is a stunning room, but you need a reservation.

btg in nyc is inherently difficult - either limited and boring or very expensive if good. it’s just the economic reality. village meursault in that location for $40 is a bargain unless it’s some really crappy producer.

imo the best place to drink wine in manhattan, that isn’t a restaurant with a great list, is still compagnie. though they do have a solid food menu.

Not a bad option, at all. I much prefer the ambience at Swan Bar(also on their VIP list which makes a difference) and they have some really well priced German wines and would also go to Parcelle over Compagnie.

Perhaps Barry can try all three and give us a force ranking.

I should have mentioned that I need wine by the glass, as I’ll only be having two glasses. Any of your recommendations have a strong by the glass list (Loire whites for example, always enjoy a good Muscadet in summer).

Thanks. They do have a wine BTG list on their site, an even a Muscadet (although never heard of Huchet).

Chambers is probably not a bad bet then. Lots of Loire whites on the list, plenty of whole bottles for under $80/b, hell even a fair amount under $50/b, which if you only have two glasses comes out to 25/glass

Absolutely wonderful all veg meal at Gem. Love what Chef Flynn is doing so much.

Chambers could be the one, thanks.

Two absolutely wonderful meals in NYC from Gem and Aska. Gem is one of the best restaurants in NYC and I feel it deserves 1 Michelin star and based on this meal maybe 2! And lunch at Aska amidst the rain is a wonderful luxury. I have been traveling so much this year I feel like I am on vacation in my own city.

Lunch at The Four Horsemen. Just so great! They are open at 11 on weekdays and it is pretty easy to get seated if you get there at 11.

I’ve always enjoyed Estatorios Milos- top quality, healthy (and a great lunch deal)

I haven’t been to the other Greek seafood places- Molyvos, Avra Estatorio, etc.

Any favorite Greek seafood places of yours? Prefer them over Milo’s?

I’ve had good times at Lelabar in Greenwich Village.

Lelabar also does most bottles off their list are BTG if you get at least 2 glasses. It’s usually just half the bottle price, so you’re not getting a deal per se.

Food is decent.

Superiority Burger 3 stars NYTimes. wow.

Very interesting list!

Some shockingly high prices , like Grand cru Chablis not ravenneau (but I’m not current on retail do maybe it’s just triple retail) but many interesting value wines (Italian Reds).

Thanks, the BTG option at half the bottle price gives hundreds of choices.

Many Loire whites that I’m not familiar with, anyone care to recommend a Loire white and Italian red (although if there is a great deal on a bottle of burgundy), let me know, I might bring a friend.

NFW!!! I just went last night and thought it was very good to excellent but not three stars! I was planning on going back soon.

$25 corkage BTW.

This the most gutsy review since the original Ssam Bar three star review.
