New York City Restaurants

Had a quick dinner at Taco Guey on 19th Street in Manhattan last night. It’s not a large menu, but if you like agave spirits and tacos it’s excellent. Also, the crudo/ceviches are really tasty.

Anyone been to JUA this year?

Anyone familiar with Quality Bistro, Loi Estiatorio, or Felipe 56? Would like to go for an early mid-week meal with my wife and friend before they go to theater at New York City Center on 55th between 6th and 7th aves. Quality Bistro looks good but may be more than we want to spend. Loi Estuaries looks like a decent Greek place. Felipe 56 not sure about. More interested in food than wine.

Thanks!

Go to Milos over Loi. A touch better in my view and also have the benefit of being slightly closer

Quality Bistro is descent, but nothing special in my view, for a better bistro experience and a better wine list, Benoit a block away would be my pick.

The Bar at the Modern is also with having a look.

Thanks very much Rodrigo. Have been to Bar at the Modern many times and know Milos and Benoit. Will definitely skip Quality Bistro.

i’m having a total mental block, so maybe y’all can help. looking for:

  • classic-ish bistro fare, ideally mid- to downtown manhattan
  • fun vibesz
  • corkage (preferred, or solid list)

Agreed. While it’s not that local for me (I’m in Hell’s Kitchen), it’s a go-to when I’m looking for a chill place to meet people downtown.

Another new Mediterranean possibility is Iris on Broadway and 55th. Pretty good food, nice room, nice bar.

not a sleeper obviously but for all of these issues, i would recommend pastis. $45 corkage is a bit high(ish) but they have waived corkage maybe 50% of the time for me. i go about 1x a month and its lively and the food is always solid.

great call. i don’t have an issue with that corkage either. thanks for reminding me.

Thank you Al. That also looks nice. Have a few good options now.

Have yet to go, but plenty of folks have been hyping up Libertine

i’ve been. it’s very good. all natural list and crappy glassware takes a bit away from the experience. but man max can cook. some serious flavors going on there.

The Bar at the Modern would seem to be a great fit.

generally a fan, but not at all bistro. and no vibe, but that’s subjective to the vibee.

Went to Seoul Salon. It is intentionally loud and dark. It has a bar feel to it. No wine at all but corkage is $35. Food was good in a comfort food way. JP from Atomix / Atoboy is overseeing the food. Prices are very fair as portion sizes are big. Our bill for two people was $60 with no alcohol. I would go back if I need a good, quick meal near Madison Square Garden. Otherwise I would stick with Atoboy which is brighter, more refined and has a good wine list.

Thanks for the review. Been meaning to make a trip out there, but sounds like one that’s skippable.

Food was very good, but the space is meant to be a fun, loud high energy place to drink cocktails.

i went earlier on so i’m sure it’s better now, but it was pretty bad when i went. service, etc. all fine. but food very uneven and the dining room is horrendous. the bar looks nice enough. for this hospitality group, this place is an outlier.
