New York City Restaurants

I have not been since pre-pandemic to the bar. The prior iteration was more snacks and not a meal. Not sure what the current menu is like.

Look into Jua or Atoboy for other modern Korean options. Or Jungsik where Chef JP of Atomix was before he opened Atoboy and Atomix.

+1 for the Jua recommendation. Went last week, this may be one of my favorite restaurants in the city currently.

Thanks all. I have the Atomix “bar” reservation so I am planning on doing that unless it’s simply not worth doing. If it’s more snacks I’ll think about another meal that evening, or can at least graze more throughout the day. Still working out my other stops as it’s been a few years since I’ve been to the city, but will definitely keep Jua in mind.

If you are still hungry Atoboy is 5 minutes away and has a bar area. I bet Atomix could call ahead and get you a seat.

While I’ve always gone with another couple and ordered off the list, the pairings are always pretty good, IMO. If we have gaps or the sommelier thinks that one of his choices works particularly well they’ve poured some for us. Reminds me that I need to make a reservation for our next trip.

So as a follow up last night we went to https://marseillenyc.com/menus/ last night as we needed a place near the theater district

25 page wine menu - heavy on French but had other European options and plenty of Domestic. Sommelier suggested a very affordable Irancy that afterwards I looked up and seemed to be the usual 2-2.5 markup so no complaints and was cheaper than I was willing to spend which was refreshing. We really enjoyed the wine where my wife was shocked how quick we finished it! List had everything from $40-$5000 bottles (DRC, Screaming Eagle etc)

As for food it’s a French bistro type the place was busy and we enjoyed all the dishes we ordered as well. If in the area we would return.

Fantastic lunch at GEM. The lunch menu is currently all vegetarian.

Be there tonight if anyone is around. [cheers.gif]

Finally made it to June Bar. We were nearby at a music performance and decided to check it out. I have been before but not since Chef Diego Moya (Hemlock, Racines) took over. The food was excellent and very similar to what he was doing at Racines.

A couple casual meals in the East Village:

Rowdy Rooster (from the Adda/Dhamaka folks) at 9th and 1st Ave – Indian fried chicken joint. Quite small and busy, but relatively quick (~10 mins. for a to-go order). We ordered some a few of the chicken dishes both “Rogue” which is their middle tier of spice. Tasty and quite spicy, even as spice-tolerant people. I felt this was a worthwhile take on fried chicken – something about spicy fried chicken and mint chutney makes sense. They could benefit from some fresh sides to cut the spice – I think almost everything is fried.

Foxface at St. Marks and 1st Ave – Tiny sandwich window attached to the William Barnacle Tavern. I visited this place a couple times after they opened shortly before the pandemic, but I hadn’t been in a while. They make some funky sandwiches, but they are very good and don’t feel gimmicky. We got the Smoking Fox (Smoked Boneless Rib, Coleslaw, Pickles, Hot Sauce) and La Borrega (Slow Roasted Lamb, Recado Rojo, Picked Onions, Cilantro) – both delicious, if a little heavy. Bring someone with you so you can share a couple of the menu items.

I went to Rowdy Rooster as well. I was a tad disappointed given how great Dhamaka is. Not sure if they have a corkage policy but we ate there with some Riesling on the DL which was a fantastic pairing.

Also walked by Foxface yesterday and wondering what it was so thanks for the write up.

Foxface is worth a look if you’re in the area. The menu changes with some regularity and seemed a little tamer this time around than what I remember from past visits.

Has anyone tried either Le Crocodile in the Wyeth Hotel in Williamsburg or Bar Bete in Carroll Gardens? Thoughts?
Thanks.

le crocodile is excellent.

How’s their alligator??

absolutely flipped for Fradei Bistro this past weekend. a tiny gem of a gastro bistro like you’d hunt down in paris. still unclear why we don’t have more of these here. highly recommended.

It looks most dope. Lots of cool stuff off the Lafayette C stop.

The Chefs worked at Septime, one of my favorite restaurants in the world. I went early on and it was great, I have a resy on Wed! Even more excited now.

yep, exactly. i think you’ll enjoy.

Thanks - Fradei is just down the hill from me and I have been thinking about going.
