New York City Restaurants

Just wondering what would be easier including restaurant in the Epicurean title where all of the restaurant threads are or moving all of the restaurant threads here. I had suggested the title change to Charlie awhile ago.

I understand, but then you have similar restaurant threads for cities like LA, SF, and Chicago in the Epicurean forum and the New York, Paris and others in the Travel forum, and then a whole separate NYC BYO thread in a completely forum, it can sometimes be tough to remember which thread is in which forum. All I’m saying is that these threads are scattered about and that it’d be nice to have some consistency in where they are located so it’s easier to find. I’m not debating where I think they should go, to me, it doesn’t really matter to me if they are in Epicurean, in the Travel forum, or elsewhere, I’d just like them to ideally be all in the same forum.

How did Per Se compare with Le Bernardin?

I am finally getting back to New York (will be in the Midtown area for business first week of April) and have time for a nice solo dinner.

Was thinking about Per Se (probably salon) or Le Bernardin, but also maybe Daniel.

Any other suggestions for a solo dinner along those lines?

As a reference point, I loved a dinner at Atera many years ago.

Tom

Not quite Midtown but close enough. I would do Brooklyn Fare over both by a long shot.

Good to know. Thanks Robert. I’ve enjoyed reading all your posts on this thread. Wish I could eat there more often.

My pleasure, just let me know if you need any other suggestions.

Booked the counter at Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare.

If there are any options to consider, please share. Not much info from their website.

Thanks,
Tom

Nice work! I think you will be very happy. The wine list is decently priced for a three star as well.

What other options to do you need?

Pairing option or just order from the list?

I personally always order off the list. That is more a personal preference. Even the meat dishes are light so a Pinot could work nicely throughout. Or Champagne. Or Riesling…

Thanks Robert! Will see what the pairings and the list look like and decide on the spot.

So I have a concert at Town Hall next week on Friday. Driving in from NJ so need something “near” the venue though it is close to Times Square so most stuff I am finding is either tourist traps or expense account type places. Looking for something not too stuffy but good quality food with decent service so we can make the show at 8pm. We tend to lean healthier and lighter versus big heavy meals (so mostly fish, chicken, though I’ll eat red meat). Any suggestions? I mean it could literally be fast casual to a decent sit down place we are flexible, just not really interested in Bobby Vans or the traditional places I quickly found online.

if you’re willing to walk a little east to rockefeller center, lodi looks solid and i imagine its relatively quiet at night.

cafe china on 37th street is excellent for sichuan. not sure if that is ideal for your food preferences. ci siamo was quite good but thats on 8th ave around 31st street.

hard to find something close by.

I went to a couple of Manhattan restaurants over the last 2 weeks . The Chef’s table was spectacular , delicious food with lot’s of truffle . A true 3 star restaurant .
Aska was fun but maybe not my style . Small portions . Excellent wine service
We absolutely loved the modern bar ( not the fancy Modern ) . Beautiful place
Ci Siamo was loud , a very big place , trendy I guess . Good Italian food .
What I enjoyed most for wine was the Grill . What a wine list , best in New York I think . Montelena 1994 was signing … the food excellent and the service perfect .
All the restaurants were fully booked , it’s difficult to make a reservation .

Thanks - so at least I am not crazy by finding it hard to find something local.
May give Lodi or at least Rock Center area a look. If we leave early enough we can probably get there and back before the concert starts. Trying to figure out if there is an opening act that would give us another 45-60 mins easily.

Butter Midtown is on 45th Street. Normally I would not recommend this place but it is very close to where you need to be, literally a 4 minute walk. And we did our work xmas party here and the food was decent and I noticed a few good wines on their list at pre-pandemic pricing.

Going to Contento tonight for the second time. This is such a cool little spot in probably the most barren of neighborhoods for anything close to fine-ish dining, southern Spanish Harlem. Last time I went had the most delicious pork schnitzel I’ve had in a while. Going to stick to the more Peruvian side of the menu this time.

Thanks - so I saw Butter a few days ago and realized I was there like 15 years ago and didn’t mind going back. Open Table had a table for 2 every 30 minutes all night long so I figured eh let me see if I can find other options. After not finding anything, and getting your recommendation I said ok let me go book a table. Now the only table is at 5:15 which is likely too early for us to get into the city. Maybe I’ll call them later today to see if they have tables not on Open Table open for reservations.

An awesome place for sure, love the vibe of it. A pretty smart wine list as well to boot.

Can anyone comment on the bar tasting at Atomix? I was trying to manage the tasting menu but wasn’t quick enough. More snacks or a meal? About all I can find with some quick searches is that it’s more “experimental” and apparently includes drinks.
