New York City ~ Once a month, or so, Blind Tasting Club

I would like to have a once-a-month or so blind tasting, but instead of it being a mess, where everybody brings a bottle, I would like that a single person be the “Host” and picks 8-12 bottles from his cellar, arranges them in proper order and serves them double-blind meaning nobody knows varietal, region, vintage or anything about the wine.

I will be the first “Host” - I’ll choose 8-12 bottles within a theme (or complementary themes) from my cellar… we can have a large rotating group, but should end up with around 8-12 people as the attendees for each tasting…

Feel free to make suggestions.
As for the first one, we’re doing it on 26th at Allegretti’s in NYC starting at 7pm - in this case, we will have two tables as an exception; considering it’s our first, we will include everyone who’s interested. I will bring two bottles of each wine or a magnum.__

Dates and "Hosts"

In case there’s ever more than 10-12 for a given date, whomever has hosted (supplied wines for) a previous evening will have priority over someone who has not yet done so.

Leo: Jan 26
Jay M.: Feb 22
Greg: March 21
Loren: April 12
Cheryl: April 26
Josh or Ben G: May
Jay H: June

Napa Cabernet?

Very interesting idea, Leo - hope it works out. You might also try Jason Hagen’s system, with the tastings at his office. Very educational, particularly when you bring some unopened, full bottles.

For your group, I’m sure you will have an interesting theme when it is Jorge’s turn.

Theme: ‘Under $18.00’

It would be nice if they all didn’t taste the same…

Interesting idea. I’m tentatively in though I expect my work schedule this year to be … non-optimal.

Kidding, let’s keep that stuff for the pros… [basic-smile.gif]
Plus, we already got a CLONYC. [wink.gif]

I’m guessing Jadot…

Not telling what I’ll bring but to give you a hint I won’t make it Jadot only, I want to give everyone a hard time in trying to guess. One thing for sure I’ll bring great stuff.

If you can suggest few dates in second half of January that might work for you.

I never thought otherwise. Sounds like a fun idea.

Tell you what big shot; since you and a certain other Cab-lover view me as such a bottom-feeder, why don’t you start a donation drive in order to help me acquire a few of those bank busting bottles like the ones you fine gentlemen seem to have in spades within the confine of your cellars?

Don’t see you complaining to hard whenever I contact you with some good deals. Just sayin’. [whistle.gif]

I like the idea as I love Blind Tasting, so I’m in depending on the date.

I’ll donate a bottle of two buck chuck to the drive to help poor Jorge.

I think he prefers Two Buck Upchuck.

Suggest some dates that might work for you in second half on January

January is done. I am booking dates in February.

That’s part of the problem. I won’t know my schedule until I find out when one of my co-workers leaves on medical leave for back surgery. Once he does my on-call schedule changes (and gets worse)

He might leave this week, he might leave the following week, etc. I hope to know soon.

Of course January already has Pratts and a Montevertine dinner which complicates things a little.

How about first week in February?

Leo - that’s a good idea. You’ve avoided the situation where everyone brings something fairly randomly. I’d actually be interested in something like that. But the problem is that lots of groups start and then peter out because there isn’t a commitment from the get-go. We have a few groups and the one that’s the most successful is one where everyone kicks in a fixed amount at the beginning of the year, then they get reimbursed or we buy wines from that kitty. You pick a fixed day and if someone can’t make the tasting, you’ve already got the money, so you don’t end up screwed.

The other thing I’d suggest is that if you don’t have enough glasses, everyone should bring some so you don’t have to taste the wines one at a time.

I’m out of the country until the 2nd week of February, then leave again around the 21st. So don’t play by my schedule. Pick a date and if I can make it I’ll be there.
