New Year's Eve Wines

One was good. One goes down as a disappointment.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/31/2016)
Lovely and complex flavors of raspberry liqueur, licorice, charcoal and garrigue. Concentrated, surprisingly firm, with a lively acidic streak to keep the sweet fruit fresh. An excellent, albeit young, wine that promises more in the future. (93 pts.)
  • 2010 Rhys Syrah Horseshoe Vineyard - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains (12/31/2016)
Green, green, green. Overwhelmingly green, vegetative (asparagus, maybe) and stemmy, both on the nose and palate. None of the black fruit I would expect from a syrah. No fruit at all, really. I have to think this was intentional, but why? (70 pts.)

The 3 year old NV Camille Saves from magnum, was surprisingly youthful, almost to the point of being harsh. This was not at all what I expected and I won’t open another for at least 5 years.
