NEW LIBRARY OFFERS HAVE DROPPED! Don't Drink Anything Boring; Drink SAMsARA. BD NEWBIE | Santa Barbara stunners

I’m new here. It’s a little early into our ‘first date’, but I can already tell that I like you Berserkers. You’re not that into ‘middle of the road’ anything, and you’re down to try new things, like starting your own wine shipping company, or the Tide Pod challenge.

I am extremely honored to participate in Berserker Day 15. HUGE thanks to Todd and the Berserker community for inviting SAMsARA into your wild wine world. I really appreciate all the support already received from the Berserkers and am really excited to dive a little deeper with y’all, meet some new folks and make some new friends.

Real quick – there is no ‘Sam’ or ‘Sara’, and the little ‘s’ in our name doesn’t mean anything, it just looks snazzy when it’s printed on a wine list .

For Buddhists and Hindus, the name ‘SAMsARA’ relates to the never-ending cycle of life (something I see in the vineyards each year as we move through the growing season). To me, the name ‘SAMsARA’ connects me to our vineyards and the annual growing cycle, and inspires me to make ‘vineyard driven wines’ that tell the story of the soil, climate, and vintage.

Making the SAMsARA wines for the last seven vintages (since 2017) has been a true privilege. I always dug the SAMsARA style of wines made by founder Chad Melville. Complex, savory, spicy reds with big mouthfeel and texture. I’m super grateful for the opportunity to continue and evolve this style and really ‘put my money where my mouth is’, making the kind of wines I like to drink.

I know it’s a busy day with a lot of cool stuff to get to, so I’ll do my best to lay it all out for you as quickly as possible.

SAMSARA 2.0

Many of you are familiar with the brand (founded in 2002!), but I’ll go through some quick history to get everyone caught up.

The organic nature of the SAMsARA 2.0 story is pretty special. Here it is in a nutshell: Chad Melville founded the brand in 2002. Fast forward to 2016 and the future for SAMsARA was uncertain due to Chad’s new full time roll at Melville after the exit of then Melville winemaker Greg Brewer. Chad wasn’t actively selling the brand, but also wasn’t planning on producing any future vintages.

Longtime SAMsARA wine club members Joan and Dave Szkutak were on their annual Santa Barbara wine trip and caught wind of the uncertain fate of one of their favorite California wineries. Joan and Dave were far from looking for a winery to buy, but it just felt right as they love SAMsARA wine and also knew I was looking for a new project.

Timing is everything! I was indeed looking for a new project after 12 great vintages at Jaffurs Wine Cellars. I learned some invaluable lessons under Craig Jaffurs, and the core of my winemaking philosophy is built around what he taught me: trust your instincts, site > everything else, resist reactive winemaking. There are some big elements of my winemaking philosophy not included in that, we’ll talk more about wine style momentarily.

Joan and Dave love SAMsARA wines because they aren’t middle of the road. They’re distinctive. They tell the story of Sta. Rita Hills. And SAMsARA’s chapter in the Sta. Rita Hills story wasn’t finished!

Joan and Dave purchased the winery in the summer of 2017. That first ‘2.0’ vintage was a little bit of a scramble, with grape contracts secured in the final stages of the growing season and the wines being produced at a shared facility.

In 2018 we found a great location in Goleta (5 minutes north of Santa Barbara) and converted an existing warehouse into our winery and tasting room. We’ve produced all our wine at our new Goleta winery since 2018, have a tasting room on-site, and we continue to operate a second tasting room in Los Olivos.

VISION FOR WINES AND WINE STYLE

Buzzwords like ‘not middle of the road’, and ‘distinctive’ sound pretty cool, sometimes it’s just fluff. I’m proud to say they actually do mean something to us.

I want our wines to be complex, with powerful aromatics and flavors. But a more elegant expression of complexity and power, with finesse. I like wines that go down easy and leave you wanting more. Give me acid, texture, salinity, spice, wild herbs and botanicals.

Without great vineyards, none of this can be achieved. SAMsARA has continued with some of the longtime partners from the early days like ‘Zotovich’ and ‘Rancho La Vina’, sites that I feel are currently performing better than ever. We’ve also added some superstars to the roster, and have been working with Radian, Bentrock, La Encantada (among others) for the last 6 vintages.

ACID – Hope you like it. We pick early, and there’s lots of it in these wines. Acidity is a gift we get from Sta. Rita Hills. It keeps our reds fresh and our Chardonnay focused, and I love it.

TEXTURE – Necessary for bright, high acid wines.

Chardonnay is barrel fermented in neutral French oak with 100% of the gross lees, lees stirring during fermentation, topping with lees to build texture and encourage ML, goal of complete malolactic fermentation (sometimes they almost get there but not 100%). ‘Longer’ 14-16 month barrel aging builds depth and mouthfeel.

Pinot / Grenache / Syrah are fermented with a big percentage of whole cluster. Aprox 50% for Pinot, generally higher % for Rhones. I’ve never met a stem I don’t like. Among the many things they do, stems bring that extra layer of fat on the mid-palate. That kinda smooth, lacquery mouthfeel that adds a little weight and sticking power.

BALANCE – We pick kinda early. It’s more common than not for SAMsARA to be the first to pick out of blocks we share with other wineries. This is done for: freshness, acidity, moderate alcohol levels, lower harvest pH levels for reds (necessary with the rise in pH from stem inclusion).

The amazing soil complexity of Sta. Rita Hills is a compelling element of the wines grown here. For that minerality to shine through and not be obscured by ripeness, oak, or manipulation, we need balance.

AU NATURAL- Native yeast, native ML, mostly neutral French oak (we use 20-30% new 500L French oak puncheons on Pinot Noir, neutral on everything else). Wines are aged on lees and never racked until bottling. Chardonnay is made sans souf (without SO2) until the wine is racked to tank before bottling. Wines are unmanipulated (have I ever made a water or acid add? Sure. But in 7 years we’ve had more vintages than not with zero adds made to anything).

2024 SAMsARA STATE OF THE UNION

Chardonnay vineyard partners: Radian, Bentrock, Francesca, Zotovich, Spear

Pinot Noir vineyard partners: Radian, Bentrock, Rancho La Vina, La Encantada, Our Lady of Guadalupe

Syrah + Grenache vineyard partners: John Sebastiano Vineyard, Zotovich, Spear, Larner

In 2023 we brought in a little over 50 tons of grapes and will produce about 3,000 cases of wine.

Another big thank you to the Wine Berserkers and especially the ‘newbie’ committee who tasted through our wines and helped me navigate our first Berserker Day!

Open invitation for any Berserkers to come and visit the winery! Please reach out to me directly on any future visits so we can meet and taste together. In the event I’m not around it’s OK – I’ll teach you the secret handshake via zoom and our capable tasting room team, or Assistant Winemaker Neal, will make sure you get to taste some extra juice while you’re here.

Please don’t drink anything boring, and thank you so much for the opportunity to share our wines with you!

Cheers!

I had the pleasure of getting to try a few of their wines during the vetting process and enjoyed them quite a bit. I think they will appeal to those who prefer Old World wines with their balance and acidity. Here are my notes:

2020 Zotovich Vineyard Syrah

Ripe raspberry/blackberry fruit with savory dried blackberry canes and hints of black olive adding complexity. A little bitter on the finish but not unpleasantly so. It blossoms with air, bringing out some pleasant floral notes and integrating the bitterness into the fruit a bit, but not completely, making it a better pairing with food than on its own. Hints of black pepper finally came out on day three. 13.5% alcohol, DIAM 10 closure.

2021 Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard

Melon, lemon, and mineral on the nose, mirrored on the palate with a touch of oak on the finish. Crisp and lean but it takes on body with air and as it warms up and it really comes together with food. This will appeal more to fans of Chablis than to those of oaky, buttery California Chardonnay. Even better on day two as it filled out and became more harmonious while still maintaining its crispness. 12.4% alcohol, DIAM 10 closure.

2021 Pinot Noir Rancho La Vina Vineyard

Dark cherry with a little spice and cola, it has refreshing acidity that brings a tangy, mouth-watering finish. Very nice on its own but it takes off with roast chicken. Even better on day two as it has filled out and is showing more complexity. 13.2% alcohol, DIAM 10 closure.

Winemaker Matt Brady was kind enough to send me these wines to sample. He has served as winemaker there since 2017. He previously worked at Jaffurs.
Matt spoke with me at length by phone, and his enthusiasm for the wines and region is palpable.
Our overall impression was that these wines are all made in a surprisingly restrained style, showcasing the Santa Rita Hills fruit while keeping everything in balance.
If you don’t have a recent reference point for this producer or region, forget what you think you know. Matt’s goal is to make restrained wines that showcase the vineyards, full stop. All the wines show a skilled winemaker’s hand, and represent the region very nicely.
Shipping and delivery of the wines were trouble-free.

2021 Samsara Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard
Diam closure. 12.4% ABV. Medium pale yellow.
Faint oak on the nose, prominent mineral notes, Granny Smith apple.
Excellent weight on the palate. A bit of textural heft, but the overall impression is very lithe and lively.
Forthright acidity. Lemon, preserved lemon, lime zest, white pepper.
Showed best at cool room temp. A versatile wine which recalls a good Chablis. Could likely age for several years at least.

2021 Samsara Pinot Noir Rancho La Vina Vineyard
A bright and lithe rendition of Pinot Noir, this wine shows wonderful bright fruit and spice.
Fermented with 60% whole cluster, it has good structure, delicious raspberry fruit, and earthy spice notes. It has a savory quality that beckons you back to the glass.
Delicious now, but could hold for some time, I’d anticipate.

2020 Samsara Syrah Zotovich Vineyard
Diam closure. 13.5% ABV.
Striking dark crimson color.
Enchanting nose with lavender, sandalwood, white pepper, rose petal. Could just sit and smell this all night.
Medium-fine tannin. Meaty blueberry, mulberry, black cherry, some umami character.
Bottom line, this is delicious, strikingly balanced and structured Syrah. Could age 5+ years, no question.

2021 Samsara Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills

12/11/2023 - I WROTE: NR (Edit)
I really like all the stuff coming out of Bentrock and radian vineyards over on the far west side and south of Santa Rosa road. The ranch is enormous so there’s tremendous opportunity for many more vineyards in that cool climate.

This had tropical fruits and bright green apple flavors. Medium plus acidity. Bright and expressive. Very nice wine.

2021 Samsara Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills

12/9/2023 - FRANK MURRAY III favorite WROTE:
This was brought to my house by a good wine buddy, he gets this from his regular shipments. Wow. What a hummer of a Chard. Drinking this at room temp because the chill wore off over dinner, so it’s gotta be 70f in my house. And yet with the temp, this stuff shines and maintains its lithe shape. A bit of Chablisienne nose, and the palate too gives off the same impression. Green apple, wet stone, lime zest, grapefruit. Finishes with maybe, maybe a light kiss of vanilla but to me this wine screams clean, fresh, soil. Damn, this is good, and is this wine in a conversation for really good CA? If not, put it there…retasted the following day, with just the small remnant of the wine kept under cork that I allowed to warm up from the fridge. Of note, I see today that the ABV on the back label says 12.4% and yeah, that seems spot on. There is a bit more density today. the wine picking up some weight and yet that just seemed to allow the wine to show some extra dimension. This wine reminds me of the delicious stuff that Wells Guthrie used to do at Copain, such as Laureles Grade or Dupratt. Really good stuff, and the kind of Chard I like to drink.

I’ve known Matt since he started at Jaffurs and had the chance to taste with him at the winery last May.

No notes on these newest releases. But I can confidently state that these wines, always excellent, have IMO improved under his hand, and show all the quality of the sites where they are grown, and maintain the distinctiveness of those sites. (Good Ohio folks behind the curtain too)

FWIW, among my favorites from California.

Thanks for the nice comments and notes! Great chatting the other night. Appreciate your recognition on the focus on restraint. Looking forward to clinking some glasses at the winery sometime in the future!

Howdy, Jeff! Thanks for the nice comments, appreciate it! Great reconnecting and tasting together last May. Hope to see you on your next SB trip, please drop me a line when you’re heading out here next (we have some cool new stuff we’re working on and would love to taste with you and get your $.02)

Hey Brig, thanks for chiming in! BR and Radian are so special. Almost feels like that little southwest pocket of SRH should be its own AVA.

My pleasure.

My friend is a club member and I’ve tasted 5-6 of the Pinot and Viognier. All are terrific.

Pinot style reminds me of a union of William Selyem meets SRH fruit.

My friend is also huge WS fan so it’s SAMsARA or WS most of the time. Life is good. :sunglasses:

We’re all road tripping up to Los Olivos in March and he’s in charge of setting up a tasting with you guys, I’ll ping you when it gets close.

Right on! Thanks for the nice WS compliment. I was lucky enough to hang and drink wine with Burt Williams a few times. Legend! Please drop me a line in March and I’ll meet y’all up in Los Olivos matt@samsarawine.com

Thanks for the order Jeff! Eager to hear how you like the new wines!

Thanks for sharing the notes on the BR chard. Love the combo of lightning bolt acidity and dense richness in this wine. The old Copain wines were huge favorites and really inspirational during my young whippersnapper winemaker days…

Putting my money where my mouth is on a Primo Pinot and a Sta. Rita Pinot Library Horizontal.

I did a tasting at the Goleta location during my first (and regrettably only so far) trip to Santa Barbara in October 2022. They were recommended by some of their peers we had visited in Los Olivos. Wonderful wines!

Love it! Thanks, Mike! Excited to hear your thoughts on the new and old wines. Cheers!

Thanks, Ian! Please drop me a line on your next SB trip (hopefully soon!). I’d be happy to meet up at the winery and taste together. Cheers!

Excited to try something new! Order in!
