It’s finally time. I need some glasses for my stickies. I’m sick of using the huge riedel or the like for the Sauternes and ports. What are people using? What do you recommend?
Well…the obvious answer is Riedel Vinum Port Glasses, and I have two. But, I really like the Riedel Vinum Sauvignon Blanc. They have the same basic shape as the BDX/Cab glass in a smaller form.
The reidels Port glasses are nice, but IME they tend to be very fragile. My favorite one is the Schotts Zweisel “IVDP sanctioned” port glass (I’m not sure the exact name of it). I have over 3 dozen of them and love them. The only person in the US that has them is someone I know in Boston. He’ll ship them to you and they are $120/case of 12. More info is HERE
Of course you may be able to arrainge pick up since you’re in Boston.
disclaimer: I have no financial interest what so ever. These glasses are not imported by SZ so are impossible to get anywhere else in the USA. Just passing on info on glasses that us Port lovers like.
Andy, am I reading that right that they are dishwasher safe? Although maybe not ideal, do you drink other “dessert” wines out of them? I want a one size fits all glass (I know nothing is perfect for all)
Yes they are dishwasher safe.
Yes, I use them for all desert wines. I don’t have the space, nor do I want to buy, a million different glasses for each specific type, so I’ve found these work just fine for Vintage Ports, Tawny, Madeira, Sauternes, Cali fortified’s, and Aussie fortified’s.
Depends on whether you want port glasses, or sauternes glasses.
For port I like the Riedel Gourmet Red. I have tons of the Riedel port glasses,a nd find they never get used as we like the bigger nose provided by the Gourmet Red.
Sauternes tends to end up in the Riedel Vinum Chardonnay glasses.
Icewine, TBA, VT, SGN, Loire stickies as well.
are you referring to the Riedel Somm. Sauternes glasses? I’ve always thought those may be the only Somm. series glasses I’d be willing to splurge on, but I’m certainly open to hearing everyone’s opinions on them.
FWIW, I tend to drink my Sauternes from glasses that have a bowl with a shape roughly approximating this: ( ) … but not quite as turned-in at the top. I prefer bigger bowls for sweet wines, as I perceive greater aromatics as a result.
