My daughter is getting married in NYC in the East Village area so I am told(9th & Ave. C). I want to make contact with a wine shop, preferably in that area of town. I need to buy a few cases of QPR red, white, and sparkling and I hope to get the shop to deliver to the site.
Recommendations and contacts appreciated. If not East Village, then certainly any other shop in the city you would recommend.
Manhattan is a relatively small island; pretty much any shop will deliver anywhere for a $100 order (give or take a buck or two). Aside from the ones Rob mentioned, try PJ’s, Cabrini Wines, hell, even Trader Joe’s nearby will fit the bill.
but on the LES (lower east side) there is Discovery Wines 10 ave A at Second street http://discoverywines.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Tinto Fino specializes in Spanish wines http://www.tintofino.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; at 85 first Ave bet 5th and 6th
congratulations! let us know if you need some time away.
Thanks Rob and Suzanne. You both have made my life a lot easier. I hope I can work in some time for an offline and be able to meet some of you. Once the date gets closer, I will post and see what we can do.
I don’t know any restaurants either, especially some that would allow me to BYOB. My wife and I will be in town for a week.
Regarding BYOB, lots of places in the East Village will allow it (with low corkage) but those restaurants are generally small and cater to a younger crowd, so their policy might be a moving target. Call anywhere you’re interested and then call again on the day of your reservation to double check- I’ve had bad experiences where the policy changed b/w when I made the call a few days in advance and when I showed up at the door (Caracas Arepas, I’m looking at you!)
Apiary and Five Points aren’t East Village, but they’re easy walking distance and they’re low corkage ($20ish?).
In general, I don’t eat much on the LES b/c I don’t like the no-reservations-small-wait-40-minutes style of place. Of the big names in the area, I liked DBGB in spite of myself (which does take reservations) and I could do without the Momofukus, except for the Milk Bar, which I think is worth every bit if the hype. Friends who do go out down there whose judgment I sorta trust have recommended Cacio E Vino for cheap Italian, but I think its non-BYO.
I agree with all of the previous posts… NYC has plenty of great wine shops that offer great values and varieties from which you can choose. And, because many of us don’t have cars, delivery is paramount when we have larger orders over a few bottles… because of this, delivery is usually free if you meet their minimum purchase, which it seems you will do most likely.
The previously suggested Astor Center, Chambers Street Wines, Sherry-Lehmann, PJs and more are all great service shops. There’s a site called http://www.WinesintheCity.com that has a pretty comprehensive list of wine shops and wine bars by neighborhood. [By the way, if you have last minute needs and are staying in the East Village that area is filled with wine shops and wine bars.]
Finally, there is a cool site called http://www.gobyo.com that lists a ton of BYOB restaurants around town. Cross reference them with the suggestions here and you should be good to go.
I live on 9th between C&D so if you need anything else please let me know. Where is the wedding?
Not sure what types of wine you like but I would recommend Chambers and Astor (although I would not rely on the salespeople, a couple are knowledgeable but most are not).
If you are in a bind there is actually a wine store on 9th&C that has a few nice choices.
The wedding is in July and needed to be inexpensive, so they are doing it at La Plaza Cultural. That is where I need the wine to wind up on a Saturday afternoon. If shops don’t deliver on Saturday, I will have to figure something else out. I can’t carry it all. In keeping with the inexpensive theme, I will be looking for some nice QPR wines and will have plenty of time to ask the shops to order them in if they don’t stock them.
Thanks again to everyone. As a Texan, I am not used to doing without a car to haul things as needed. NYC is a challenge to my way of thinking.
Most wine stores in NYC will be able to deliver that kind of order on a Saturday without a problem. Personally, if QPR is an issue I would avoid Astor. While they’re the closest major store and have a deep selection, I think they have the highest markups of any of the big NYC stores. (I can frequently get wines cheaper in the store near my girlfriend’s house in Boston for less than Astor’s price…which given MA pricing is completely ridiculous). Chambers is going to mark you up as well for some wines, but I find that their pricing is more idiosyncratic, its not the 15% across-the-board overpricing that Astor does. Given that anyone in Manhattan can deliver to the EV, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t see if the guys at Cabrini or Garnet or even PJs are willing to cut you a deal.
Great advice. I will create a list of the wines I want and call a few of these stores to get their price/commitment. The information all of you have provided is much appreciated.
This place seems to have good pricing. I’ve ordered a few times in the past without incident. I don’t have enough experience to say if they can provide all the service you seek. Worth a call.
Michael - I sent you a PM with some more thoughts.
Also the winestore that is right across the street from the wedding is called Brix.

Their selection is small but decent. Prices are slightly higher than high volume places like Astor. However if you know what you want and buy in quantities they might be able to order and give you a good deal. It will certainly be easy as it is right across the street.
Thanks Robert and all. Robert, I received your pm and appreciate your offer very much.
As for BYOB restaurants, location is not really an issue. We will probably stay in a brownstone in Brooklyn and make ample use of the subway. You get a lot more space for a lot less money than you do in Manhattan. Besides, my daughter lives in Brooklyn which will simplify some of our activities.
As I mentioned to Robert in my pm reply, the wedding is July 10. My wife, my 17 year old (last of 5)and I are arriving on 6 July and returning 13 July. I hope we can meet up with a few of you some evening for some good food and good wine.
I suspect it is inappropriate to post my email address in public but if anyone wants it, pm me and I will reply with it.
