Need Viet Nam restaurant recs

Restaurants in Danang, Hoi An, Saigon, Siem Reap needed . . .

Which part of Vietnam is this ??:wink:

When I was there I just ate at all the food stalls around the tourist sites. No running water. Super sus cleanliness. But no stomach issues and some of the best food you’ll have on your trip! $1-2 per meal. Crazy. Good.

Just gotta brave it and go for it.

Don’t know. Wife planned and just gave me list. Thanks.

Cambodia, near Ankor wat.

Just messing. Siem reap is in Cambodia. Eat local street food is my recommendation. Amazingly good.

Be considerate when calling it Saigon. Not all will approve.

La Villa was an interesting french fine dining restaurant there. Been over 10 years but I remember it was very good.

All of our best meals were street food.

Visited Hanoi in November.

As the other guys say, just sit down on whatever plastic stool looks like the busiest and most interesting.
Generally, you’ll find that the stalls serve soups like Pho or Bun Rieu in the morning and then converts to Bun Cha for lunch. Dinner it might be something else entirely. Never once had stomach issues.

I just follow the rule that it’s good if it’s full of locals. Always works.

Thanks. I’m hearing here that street food is the way to go but I’ve been warned that it isn’t necessarily safe . . .

Going to Cambodia also.

I was very happy not eating street food on my 10 days there (10+ years ago).

This is of course also perfectly fine. Do what you want to do.

For the dangerous or unclean part. Pho is kept at a constant just below boiling temperature, and bun cha is grilled well done, as two examples. If it pleases you to do it inside with a table setting then go for it.

I’m in Vietnam right now.

Saigon is the name for district 1 & 3. Locals call it that. There are Saigon hats and tshirts everywhere.

The all the other districts are considered Ho Chi Minh but they go by their district number or koreatown, Chinatown, etc.

I started a Cambodia topic 3 days ago but haven’t posted anything yet. I was in SIem Reap and can help when I get back to the US in a week.

I’ll write everything up just some downtime required.

Generally a busy local place is much safer than a western place that only caters for tourists.

Yes, the parts that are “Sai Gon” are OK, but if you are not in those districts and you call the city Saigon, some might still consider that slightly political, usually the older people.

For Alan, make sure you visit Cu Chi tunnels.

Noted but it’s what the Vietnamese travel agent has called it.

Strongly recommend following western restaurants if want a break from Vietnamese food

Da Nang

  • Le Comptoir (French)
  • See Dining
  • Rang (Indian)

Hoi An

  • Lim’s dining room (best pizza in Asia IMO)

Hoi An Restaurants

  1. Morning Glory - finer dinning
  2. Faifoo - great food great view
  3. Pause and Enjoy - great vibe and food

And number one is Bahn Mi Queen, wildly casual, crowded and fun. Below is a picture of the cash register. Four of us were out of there for $9 and we had a beer, smoothie and water.
