Wanted to tap the collective wisdom as to some great Paris wine stores.
I need to procure some reasonably well priced Grand Cru Burg to take to Oz for a tasting masterclass and my supplier in the UK has fallen through. Does anyone have any suggestions for some cavistes for me to visit?
Caves Auge= don’t walk in waving cash, they’ll kick you out, they’re old-fashioned. Talk to them, get to know them somewhat, show them that you know what you’re talking about. Then they’ll open the doors to the magic kingdom and you will be very, very happy.
Caves Legrand= wave your cash here if you want, great selection but prices are high.
Those are my 2 main go-tos in Paris. I also hit tons of smaller, natural wine stores but for what you’re looking for these plus the big Lavinia store should work.
Agree Michel, Lavinia and Legrand were two of my first thoughts. Is Cave Auge really that strong on GCs? I might add: Les Caves Taillevent. 199 rue du Faubourg St-Honoré, 8e
In addition to those already mentioned, La Derniere Goutte, if still unchanged from '02, is a nice little shop with a really sweet selection of thoughtfully hand selected labels.
I had good luck finding some nice bottles of '89 and '90 Bordeaux at Maison des Millesimes when I was there in May. Very helpful and friendly staff. 137, boulevard Saint-Germain, just east of the Saint-Germain-des-Pres metro.
Does anyone know the name of a wine shop on the east side of the boulevard Beaumarchais? On my last day in Paris it was a Sunday, and they were closed. From what I could see looking in the window it made me want to seek it out on the next trip. I should’ve written down the name.
I’ve also had fun talking with the salesguy named Gilles at Au Verger de la Madeleine, 4, boulevard Malesherbes, just of the Place de la Madeleine. They have a nice selection of hard to find digestifs.
Augé does have an awesome selection. They provide wine for Le Severo too, best steak I know of and a wine list that will drop your jaw. Funnily I find the restaurant prices at Le Severo to be incredibly fair whereas the store prices at Augé are on the high side.
I know, I went for the Anglo-owned shops. But honestly they are both worth the visit even if they aren’t 1000% french. I enjoy “authentic” experiences but I think both of the guys running these stores have only improved the wine-landscape of the city.
And eat at Le Severo. The place is run by a former butcher and they serve aged steaks. Sensational results.
Nicolas are chain wine stores, not terrible but nothing interesting (for wine geeks at least). Go to Les Caprices de l’Instant, 12 Rue Jacques Cœur, a block from the Bastille.
There’s a wine shop in the covered St Germain market that has a few gems at good prices, can’t remember the name I’m sorry and opens at irregular times.
Paris by mouth has some suggestions for 75011 (11e). Haven’t been to any and most are small wine bars with bottles for sale. Always hearing good things about Verre Vole, which might be a touch out of the way. Nicolas is fine for mainstream stuff.
