Visiting Napa next week, has anyone here been on the dinner trips on the wine train? I was looking at the Dome car. Pricey, but is the food good, if so it seems a nice experience. Input by you wine geeks is appreciated. Foodies too… ![]()
I have never heard anything good about the food or service on the train. Seems like a whole bunch of money to just ride up and down the valley…pretty much a tourist trap.
For non-winegeek tourists
Given the choice between being stabbed and riding the wine train, I’d probably prefer to be stabbed.
lmao
That’s how I’ve always felt about Disneyland.
Check out the Yelp reviews for the wine train. Interesting reading and it should help you decide.
I’d probably agree with you, but only if the stabbing instrument is a Wusthof.
I’d pass. You can see the same view from your car or a bike. The food is only so-so. Takes a fair amount of time that you could use more productively.
Harris,
It’s been a few years since we went. The food & service were good but you’ve seen much of the valley that the train treks through and there are so many great places to eat. For the money you could get a limo to drive you up & down the valley & have dinner too. My .02
+1 on Carrie’s suggestion. Something else to consider - drinks at Auberge during sunset.

Well, I am trying to do something special. Above Tra Vigne but not as crazy pricey as French Laundry. Would Auberge be the place? Good late afternoon view, very good food?
Any other suggestions
Was already at Solbar
Something new?
I hear people throw eggs at train windows as its going by!
I mooned the train once.
Auberge is a really nice place - a real relaxing yet upscale vibe and a great view. I haven’t eaten there recently - I’m sure others can report back on the food. I do always recommend drinks at Auberge - lots of wines by the glass and oh yeah did I mention that there’s a view
. Miromoto is a terrific new restaurant in downtown Napa at the Riverfront that you might want to consider also (food is outstanding). Upscale and very trendy (opposite vibe of Auberge) - just depends on what you’re looking for. Hope this helps.

Thanks Karen, Auberge sounds like a good fit. Nice view, good drinks and food. Thanks
+1 preferring the stabbing
The view from Auberge is the best. The food is good not great and very expensive for what it is. Lunch is very good, same view.
+1 to Mike S.
In SJC or Laguna Niguel?

Sorry - got lost in the thread. If you are looking for a special EXPERIENCE as in location, ambiance, very, very good food, wine and attention, then Auberge is your place. I am local and do not know of another place like it. Late lunch is expensive and sublime.
