Napa 2023: What Are Your Must-Have Allocations at Different Price Points?

It seems like 2023 is expected to become the “vintage of century” for Napa. I am curious what the board’s favorite must have allocation Napa wines are in the following price ranges: under $100, $100 - $200, $200 - $300.

Let’s not include impossible to get allocation wines such as Macdonald since we can’t get off the waitlist :frowning:

Bard from Realm would be my pick for $100 - $200 range.

Don’t think there are any “must haves” except maybe aside Macdonald, Scarecrow?

As 2023 was such a great year it seems like theres a lot more supply and wine to go around for folks and the average person isn’t going to be stocking up as much as you think (if at all).

If I had to guess you will be able to find 99% of wines at auction / secondary at lower prices down the line.

With that being said, to add some names I’ll buy for the 2023 vintage:

$100-200: Bard, MOWE
$200-300: Kinsman Eades
$500+: Scarecrow
$1000+: Harlan (big maybe probably a game time decision)

Beta + Jasud
Robert Craig
Mowe

That’s my extremely pared down list. I used to buy 10+ cases of Napa annually.

If I had a pile of cash to buy what I wanted, I’d go buy 2013 Napa at auction or add reasonably priced Bordeaux instead.

Thanks for the recommendation! Just signed up for MOWE - first time hearing about it, but pretty excited to add them to my cellar!

I will probably wait out KE on secondary since I have seen some of them on auction.

Just signed up for Beta + Jasud as well!

I drank 2013 opus one recently and it was pretty good, but not sure if I am willing to pay a lot for it necessarily. Any specific 2013 Napa wines that are drinking well now in your opinion within reasonable budget? I have been drinking younger Napa wines in general since I live nearby and tend to buy them directly from wineries. I’m also not good at waiting 10+ years to drink a glass of wine

I have been buying some older Bordeaux as well because I tend to like older Bordeaux.

Another beta + jasud!

Guessing these will all fall in the $100-200 category, my must haves are

William Mary

I am lucky to represent a lot of my favourite wineries in Quebec so will get access to those, however for those which I buy direct:

  • MOWE
  • Spottswoode (Technically get this in Quebec, but if issues persist will buy direct)
  • Realm

Will pick up a few bottles from FM and thinking about William & Mary or Di Costanzo. However other bottles I will buy at auction since it will probably work out to be 30% less: VHR, Blankiet, Favia

Surprised to see Palisades Canyon isn’t on anyone’s list. The first release last fall was pretty fantastic, to my palate.

Me too, although I asked for a hall pass, given my longevity on the list. I guess we will see.
My other definite buys will be Kinsman-Eades, MACDONALD, and Lewelling.

Allocation I will always take : MACDONALD

Allocation I’ve been on the longest that I may drop after 2023: Scarecrow

New Allocation that I’m glad to be on the list: Mowe

Everything else from Napa I’ve dropped, mostly because I have more than enough
