My Spatlese and Auslese Extravaganza

Hi Berserkers,

Purely on an impulsive whim last night, I tried my first ever German Riesling Spatlese, a newly released Dr. Hermann 2008 vintage at the flagship Summerhill LCBO tasting bar. Oh. My. God. Unbelieveably good. I couldn’t believe it was only listed as a Medium sweet with 60 grams of residual sugar per liter.

I returned at lunchtime immediately spoke to their product consultant to get some recommendations and made a trade-in/purchase of a half-dozen German spatleses and ausleses today with a bonus of a California Black Muscat and a blueberry-cranberry fruit wine thrown in. The goodies acquired are:

Friedrich Becker 69 2008 Riesling Spatlese $35.00 GR
Gunderloch 2006 Riesling Auslese $59.00 GR
Markus Molitor 2008 Riesling Spatlese $35.00 GR
Pfeffingen 2008 Riesling Spatlese $19.95 GR
Pfeffingen 2008 Gewurztraminer Spatlese $19.95 GR

Baroon Herzog 2009 Black Muscat $15.95 CA
Muskoka Lakes 2009 Blueberry Cranberry $16.95 CN

It’s gonna be a fun weekend trying some of these. TNs will follow, of course.

Nice!

Back in the day I purchased a bunch of 01 Donnhoff Spatlesen which I thought would be a good introduction to German rieslings (and still do); still trying to avoid cracking them to allow them to age. I then discovered I enjoy kabinetts too, which is great for the budget and are drinkable earlier to boot. Very versatile wines, all.

Cheers,
Doug

Whoa, Tran, now you’re on a downward spiral into greatness; wines that can crackle and scream intensity and verve and will beg for fruit tarts.
