My Mystery California Dessert Wine!

Greetings fellow fraternity members!
Brand new member from Toronto here! My first post!

Going through my cellar the other day, I noticed, in my possession, a rare and mysterious bottle of “ 1982 Chateau St. Jean, Sauvignon d’Or, Select Late Harvest, Sonoma Valley, 35.3 Brix “ dessert wine.
At 35.3 Brix, this wine has more residual sugar than a Canadian Icewine, German Beerenauslese or French Sauternes wine!..colour is as dark as my 1975 Chateau D’Yquem!

Communication between the winery and myself regarding this wine’s current pricing, rating, drinkability, tasting notes…etc resulted in the following response from the owner/winemaker….” I can’t find anything in our record about this wine! “

Most weird and interesting?!!

Anyone, by chance, came across a similar wine of this nature and would like to share information? Thank you!

The select late harvest was Richard’s second sweetest wine (the sweetest were IDBSLH or individual cried bunch selected late harvest - they last a long time - I still have 70s of those and early 80s of the SLH Rieslings that are fine but have no experience with the sauv blancs. I’d guess that you should get into them sooner rather than later. And post notes!

With 51% SB and 49% Semillon, I’m thinking it’ll behave and develop more like a Sauternes and have a pretty long life!

With an R.S of 13% it won’t last as long as the Rieslings at 28% but I’d agree that was what Richard was shooting for - a California Sauternes. Please do post notes when you taste it.

What a cool piece of history!

Welcome Charles. Very cool piece of history and I’m sure the winery is as interested as we are. It’s late harvest so I’m assuming no botrytis, so it will be a little different from a Sauternes, but should be really good.

Welcome! Awesome cellar find - gotta love when you come across random bottles that you didn’t even know you had!

I’ve never seen that one but i do have this half bottle in the cellar. Hard to tell through the glass but mine doesn’t look nearly as dark as yours. Not sure when ill open mine but I’ll be sure to report back

Hey Doc…were the hell you livin now a days…OR, Mexico…Phoenix???

Hope all is well my man!

It was 35 Brix at harvest but residual sugar is 12.8%, so similar to Sauternes.

I’ve got a bottle of Kalin “cuvée d’OR”…which is suppose to resemble Yquem…80%Semillon 20 SB. Never seen your bottle before.
