Moving Wine & wine glasses

I think I may be moving in a couple of months to a place about 10 mins away (so it’s not too long of a move).

I’ve got about 3 dozens of wine glasses, and a few decanters, and was wondering what’s the best way to pack these?
It seems like putting these in a uhaul box is bad?

Also got about 100 bottles or so in a wine fridge… i’m guessing i need to take these out before the movers will move the fridge?
Do i just stick them in cardbox boxes? or are foam shippers recommended for transport of that distance?

moving… it’s such a pain… [head-bang.gif]

Thanks!!

Hey Mark,

I got a huge box, filled it with packing peanuts and just threw in about 40 wine glasses.
For wine, I moved about 500 bottles from San Diego to Los Angeles and I just packed them into the cardboard shippers. You’re only going 10 minutes so it’ll be ok.

If your move is that short I’d suggest doing the wine & stuff in your car on your own. Glasses fit well in upright wine boxes with the softer non-corrugated inserts, or you can just wrap everything in bubble wrap and/or newsprint and put in a big box as Charlie suggests however I personally would not just ‘throw them in’ and hope for the best. As for the wine you don’t even need shipping boxes, regular cases from your local wine store should be fine. I would use shipping boxes if you’re leaving the wine to the movers, however. Good luck with the move!

Hey, I moved recently about 40 minutes away. We did a portion of moving ourselves…things where I didn’t want to trust a mover to packup and move. Included in those items were all my nice wine glasses, decanter, fine china, etc… If you’re only 10 mins away, just make several trips with your breakables in your own car. My wife is a pack rat, so we had leftover packing peanuts and bubble wrap from past online purchases to protect everything. if nothing else, just use crumpled up newspaper and wrap each glass. and put into a 12 bottle wine cardboard case.

glasses - newspaper, packing peanuts, in a cardboard box…
wine - regular cases, move myself.

Nothin’ fancy huh… cool thanks guys!

Used regular case boxes from my local liquor provider. There were a lot of trips up and down the stairs.

You can go to a local restaurant supply store or party store that rents glasses and rent from them the plastic caddy that they use to move glasses. It fits three dozen glasses. Our wine group owns glasses and that is how we store/move them.

That’s a great idea as long as the caddy fits your glasses…

The last time we moved, my wife told me not to worry about the wine glasses. Since we upgrading accommodations, she was going to upgrade wine glasses. Did manage to get three half gallons of Red Mountain, my last two bottles of Mateus and one bottle of Lancers packed and taken to the new house.

Whether it be for short distance moving or having to shift wines from one storage container to another, it makes sense to store empty cardboard wine cases for such, assuming one has room. For the same reason, I have saved the original stemware boxes. Both have come into valuable use over the years, especially the wine cases when I had one of my 3 standup units conk out and had to moved 300 bottles to a temporary site before buying a new one.

No newspaper! You can buy unprinted newsprint almost everywhere, and you won’t have to wash the glasses when you get into your new place.
