Moving to Hawaii...shipping options

A buddy of mine is moving from San Diego to Oahu and has about 100 bottles that are worth shipping. Outside of FedEx/UPS are there other options out there?

Thanks!

He could always check them in

This is one reason that I haven’t moved to HI, yet.

Charlie - I’m sure its airline specific, but can you box up 8 cases/boxes and have them checked?

Only if you use a product called Wine Check

I think I would consider the airlines freight department, not checking it for that much wine.

We purchased as wine transporter “suitcase” and they had the option of 8,9 or 12. By law, we were told, the airlines will only permit 8 bottles at a time unless they don’t catch it. We bought the 8 bottles [price difference was negligible].

While beverages with an alcohol content of greater than 70 percent are prohibited and those with an alcohol content between 24 and 70 percent are limited, there is no TSA-regulated quantity limit on beverages with less than 24 percent alcohol, such as wine. Airline-created checked baggage limits still apply, but passengers are free to use the entirety of their quota for wine transport.

googled and copied of usa today

You may want to check with Mike Gillespie at Wine By Air, Intl. I have a client that he used to air cargo ship 5-8 cases every winter when the client headed out to HI for the winter. Probably not cheap, but he can definitely get it there, and refer storage on both ends. mike@winebyairintl.com or 650-508-9631

You could check with Marc Lazar at: http://www.domainewinestorage.com/wine-services/. Could be kinda pricy.

I shipped twenty cases from SF to Hawaii a few years ago. I used Honolulu Freight out of San Leandro in the Bay Area. I also shipped during January to lessen the likelihood of heat damage. When I asked about whether or not they had reefers they told me that there was one reefer temp and it was 18 degrees F so I just used non-cooled basic container. My wine arrived in perfect condition and I still continue to enjoy bottles from the mid 80’s and 90’s. I ended up paying $.60/bottle vs. $6-10/bottle (recently had 4 bottles 2nd day aired from Vinfolio; $100!) for 2nd day air.

Maybe there is a shipper in San Diego who ships to Hawaii.

Hope that helps.

Aloha! [cheers.gif]

Thanks all!!!

Wine By Air International covers all the Hawaiian islands, in and out, temperature-controlled

Welcome Michael!

If you are ITB/associated with Wine By Air International, you should disclose that.

Alaska Airlines offers same day service, which is basically unheard of.
I was paying around $60–/case from Seattle to the big island.

The cases do need to be dropped off and picked up (and you need to be a TSA shipper).
