Nobody commented on that on either.
My google search thinks Picardin is a bug repellent.
Maybe it is. It’s probably not beyong Diageo and their ilk to make a switcheroo like that.
“Let’s age our white wine on leaves” is an interesting thought

I am fascinated by the work Cairdeas Winery is doing in the Lake Chelan area.
They grow Mourvèdre, Carignan, AND Alicante Bouschet. You know that has captured my interest!!
So a global warming grape?
I thought Carricante was the next great white wine.
I’m with Warren here…
The author of the article is most famous for her book about her ancestors who started what became Wells Fargo Bank. Her cousin Warren Hellman is well remembered here for creating the Mostly Strictly Bluegrass music festival here. Her sister wrote a famous book about the Mondavis.
To graduates of a farm school south of SF her family name just might ring a bell.
Also famous to anyone who followed the Premier Cru saga, since she bird-dogged that and wrote intelligently about it.
And to anyone who knew the bankruptcy bar in San Francisco.
I enjoyed the article, but have a couple of quibbles:
I don’t know where she came up with “1368 grape varietals in the world”, but it’s certainly an undercount. Greece has over 600.
“just a little more than an acre of picardan planted”.
Considering how many wineries in Chateauneuf claim to incorporate all 13 permitted grapes, I don’t see how the acreage could have been that low.
I’ve never had a varietal Picardan but look forward to trying it. There was a recent thread on whether people are buying broad or deep. I’m definitely in the ‘buy broad’ camp, still enormously interested in trying… and when possible selling… new wines.

I thought she said there were seven acres planted.
I feel sorry for the people who jumped the gun and planted ribolla gialla.
Mel, here’s a paste from the article:
“Even though it is one of the 13 certified grapes permitted for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, there was just a little more than an acre of picardan planted around the world until recently.”

But aren t there seven now?? At this rate Idaho will be covered in Picardin by 2025.
